Outdoor Adventure
Adventure. Leadership. Discovery.
At Fryeburg Academy, the Outdoor Adventure Program, led by our Outdoor Learning & Research Center (OLRC), is a cornerstone of experiential learning, rooted in adventure and personal growth. Through snow sports, hiking, paddling, overnight expeditions, and immersive outdoor experiences, students challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop leadership skills in real-world settings. Every student participates in the ropes challenge course, where teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth take center stage. From day trips to extended overnights in the Maine wilderness, OLRC empowers students to discover their strengths, lead with purpose, and embrace adventure in every season.
Outdoor Adventure Certificate
As an extension of the Outdoor Adventure Program, the OLRC offers a certificate program that provides students with a deeper, more immersive pathway into experiential, outdoor-based learning. Through a structured sequence of Outdoor Adventure courses, students build and refine skills in areas such as snow sports, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and wilderness first aid. By the end of the program, participants will have progressively developed their abilities and demonstrated the learning outcomes outlined below.
"Education is not an affair of 'telling' and being told, but an active and constructive process."
- John Dewey
