FA to Build the first Maine CubeSat Satellite in Collaboration with the Maine Space Consortium
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Warren Ziegler, a physics teacher at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Maine, recently gave a presentation to the Maine Space Grant’s summer interns on Friday, June 22, at the Senator Inn and Spa in Augusta. Dr. Ziegler’s presentation was on the Academy’s initiative to build and orbit a small satellite (CubeSat). A CubeSat is a type of miniaturized satellite that weighs about 3 pounds and has dimensions of 4x4x4 inches. CubeSats are a cost-effective platform for science investigations, new technology demonstrations and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. CubeSats are put in orbit by deployers on the International Space Station or launched as a secondary payload on a launch vehicle. To date, NASA has selected 149 CubeSat missions from 85 unique organizations representing 38 States and the District ofColumbia. Fryeburg Academy’s CubeSat will be the first satellite built in Maine.
About the Maine Space Grant Consortium and the MERITS Summer Intern Program
The Maine Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) is a member of the national network of Consortia in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The network is funded by NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program.
MSGC’s mission is to:
Improve our Affiliates research infrastructure in areas of mutual interest to NASA and the state of Maine;
Encourage more students to consider careers in STEM; and
Enhance NASA’s presence throughout the State National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program of Maine.
The Maine Research Internships for Students (MERITS) Program provides summer research opportunities to Maine high school juniors in host institutions across the state. Students in the MERITS program experience “real-time” applications of STEM in a research-focused work world conducting research and technology development.
