Nico Zakon ‘21 and Aaron Zakon ‘22 Present at IEEE Integrated STEM Education Conference

Nico Zakon ‘21 and Aaron Zakon ‘22 were accepted to present their projects at the IEEE Integrated STEM Education Conference (ISEC) held at Princeton University on March 11, 2018.
IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The annual ISEC conference features cutting-edge research and experiences with integrated approaches to the study of science, math, and technology through engineering projects and other design disciplines.

In 2013, the Zakon brothers co-founded the Explorers FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotics team. They led the team to win four regional championships and six trophy awards in a span of four years... Nico and Aaron used their experience with FLL to develop their project posters to present at the conference.

Nico’s poster was entitled,  “Experiencing STEM through FIRST Lego League,” and focused on a pet bubble project his team designed to address the issue of pet survivability --especially during natural disasters such as flooding when pets cannot always be evacuated. Aaron’s work was titled “ThermoVest” – a temperature-sensing dog harness with a wireless notification developed to address service dog overheating. The genesis of this project was a U.S. Department of Homeland Security solicitation looking for ideas on how to prevent border patrol dog deaths.

In addition to presenting their innovative projects, the Zakon brothers learned from scientists and engineers at the conference who offered workshops and interacted with students during the poster session. Nico and Aaron look forward to sharing all that they learned from this exciting engineering project with their classmates and teachers at Fryeburg Academy to inspire future participation in similar events.
