For Gillian Brosnan ‘17, her love for art first took shape in the form of illustrations. In middle school, Brosnan discovered a fondness for creative writing and was compelled to illustrate the characters in her stories, which later evolved into portraits. “I really like to draw portraits in graphite and charcoal,” says Brosnan. “In this medium, you can get realistic skin tones. I also work with watercolor, painting with lighter colors and graduating to darker ones.”
Brosnan’s artwork is currently on display in the Helen and Harry Nadler Student Gallery, located in the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center. Brosnan’s exhibit is a culmination of artwork from her senior portfolio — many of which were submitted to the Maine College of Art in Portland where Brosnan plans to attend in the fall. “I looked at a bunch of art schools, but nothing compared to the feel of MECA (Maine College of Art) … I enrolled in a pre-college program there and loved it,” continues Brosnan.
Brosnan attributes her success at Fryeburg Academy to Mr. Pullan, her art teacher, who not only inspired her to pursue a career in teaching art but also was instrumental in helping Brosnan through the college application process and applying to MECA. “Every teacher I had at the Academy was open to me being an art student,” says Brosnan. “Even in my finance class, Ms. Loewe encouraged me to use art to help solve problems by designing ads to help market companies … and Ms. Paulding and her husband helped me to showcase my work at Gallery 302 in Bridgton, Maine last semester.”
When asked what advice Brosnan would give FA students who may be interested in pursuing art, she had this to say: “When I was a freshman here, and before I decided to become an art teacher, it wasn’t really something I talked about much at first. But I'm glad I did [during my sophomore and junior years] because I wouldn’t have been picked as “Most Artistic” for the yearbook or encouraged by my teachers. If you want to make art your career, learn to talk about your interests, that way, you can get the encouragement and support you need to pursue your dreams.”
