FRYEBURG — With the State Meet on the horizon, the Fryeburg Academy indoor track team continues to post impressive results. Half of the girls and boys on the team have qualified for next month's championships.

"With one regular season meet remaining some of our athletes are winding down while others are gearing up," Kevin McDonald, Raiders' head coach, said. "It's a great time of year, our championship season. We now have 14 athletes qualified for the State Meet. This equals half of the team as we took 28 athletes to our last meet. With two meets remaining to qualify, hopefully more Raiders will punch their tickets and join us on the bus to States."

Highlighting last Friday's meet at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham was the performance of Anna Lastra, who shattered the school two-mile record for the second time this season.

"At the start of the season the record stood at 11:43.18, a very respectable time,' McDonald said. "Anna dropped that to 11:31.33 earlier this season. After the dust settled on Friday, the new record stood at 11:21.96. A mark that is very close to qualifying for the National High School Championships held in New York City in early March.

"Anna is a joy to work with," he continued. "A shining example of work equals success. Talented and tenacious, she knows what it takes and is not afraid to go for it. I know Anna slept with a smile Friday night, and I do not think she is done with the indoor record book just yet."

Also Friday, Jake Maidment is going to States in the pole vault.

"Jake met the provisional standard with a leapt of 8'6". New to the event this year Jake is yet another example of work equals success," McDonald said. "One of our captains, it gives us great pleasure to see Jake succeed. There is nothing more rewarding as coaches to see a young man mature as a student athlete and experience success. We are overjoyed to have Jake on the bus to States."

Olivia Pelkie exploded onto the scene on Friday.

"Olivia showed great promise last spring as a freshman but had been struggling as of late," McDonald said. "We spoke with Olivia about our concerns and asked for more focus and dedication to the sport. Boy, did she deliver. Olivia won the 400-meter run with a time of 1:05.79, leading the Raiders to a one, two, three finish. Not only does that qualify for States but that time could put her on the podium. This young lady has, if she wants, a very bright future in track and field.

Coach McDonald said Evan Wadsworth is putting everything together at just the right time.

"Evan broke through in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters, running State qualifiers in both," he said. "We are so happy to see Evan experience this success. Quiet, strong and grounded, Evan is a great example of what a teammate should be. Evan is also a member of the 4x200 relay team that could be a huge factor with our success at States."

McDonald is looking forward to the road leading up to the State Meet.

"The next three weeks are going to be very exciting," he said. "This is the time of year when everything comes together and the benefits of all the work are rewarded. We tell all our athletes, trust in your training, believe in yourselves and don't let the guy between your ears be your worst enemy."
