Fryeburg Academy’s Goldberg Gallery Presents Artwork from Jean Bradley and Rik Phillips

Beginning in January, the Goldberg Gallery will host paintings of Jean Bradley and sculptures of Rik Phillips. Jean Bradley has been a professional painter and a teacher for the past thirty years.
In 2005, her work was published in a book entitled “How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint Your Favorite Subject.” In the February- March 2006 issue of the prestigious art magazine, Bradley’s painting “Voluptuous Papayas” appeared on the cover with a ten-page feature article on her “Rhythm and Light” series, including a demonstration of an acrylic painting from start to finish using her art techniques. “When viewing my work, people often comment that they feel the life force and energy in the vibrant colors and movement,” says Bradley. “It’s my expression of the magic in nature. My paintings reflect my personal love of light and movement, capturing the shafts of sunlight and ribbons of color dancing on palm fronds or other surfaces in nature as well as on the faces of people around me. Color and light are my passion and finding new ways to express their use on canvas is what stirs my artistic soul.”

Also on display is Rik Phillips’ sculpture. Phillips has been a sculptor for thirty years. The first twenty years were spent learning various techniques on how to manipulate metals of all kinds, including steel, copper, and bronze. His sculpture ranges from six or seven inches to fifteen or twenty feet. Recently, Rik has been taking a journey with various woods. His techniques are woodturning and positive and negative sculpture. Rik’s works are in collections nationwide, and one sculpture is a “state treasure” in New Hampshire. Rik’s work has several influences, including Japanese art, nature, and pop
culture. Rik weaves a little joy, a lot of sculptural ‘know-how,’ and a dash of humor in his work. “The art that I create represents everyday objects,”  adds Phillips. I find clarity in taking a seemingly simple functional form and elevating that form to a higher work of art. Different elements are carved or turned on a lathe to create one larger sculpture. Many are functional, and some pieces are purely sculptural, just to display and enjoy. My primary medium is now metal. In the past, I’ve enjoyed working with wood as well as bronze. A thread of whimsy seems to weave its way through all my work.”

  • Academy Students Earn Silver and Bronze at the National FFA Convention

    From October 31 through November 3, five members of the Academy's FFA Chapter (Future Farmers of America) and faculty member Jennifer Solter Jones attended the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

  • FA's Falls Sports Assembly Honors Student-Athletes

    On Thursday, November 16th, Fryeburg Academy celebrated the fall sports season with its annual fall sports awards assembly held in the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center. The following student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding performance during the fall 2023-24 season:
     

  • Joseph R. Manning Installed as the Academy's 55th Head of School

    Fryeburg Academy and the Board of Trustees announce the installation of Joseph R. Manning as the Academy’s 55th head of school. The Installation Ceremony was held on Friday, November 3, 2023, with members of the Fryeburg Academy community, the Board of Trustees, and former head of school Erin P. Mayo in attendance as a guest speaker. Manning steps into this new leadership role during the school’s 232nd year, following a long-tenured and successful career at the Academy spanning twenty years of service. 

  • FA Students Earn Letters of Commendation in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program

    Fryeburg Academy seniors Tyler Bartick and Jiwon Choi have earned Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC) for their performance on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
