Ben Hammond enjoyed four years in the spotlight as an actor/musician at Fryeburg Academy.
He was a member of the award winning Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Big Band. His talent as a singer, beat boxer, and bass player helped lead the groups to multiple first place finishes at State level competitions. During his senior year, he was recognized as the Best Male Vocalist at the Maine State Vocal Festival. An active member in drama productions, Ben won an individual award for his musical adaptation of “Wiley and the Hairy Man” at the Maine Regional One-Act Finals. Ben participated in Class One-Acts and all-school musicals throughout his Academy career. He also was a four-year member of the rock band, two-year member of the track and field team, and played football his freshman and sophomore years.
He continued his passion for music in college at McGill University, where he majored in music technology and jazz voice. He was a member of the McGill A Cappella group “Effusion” who were group finalists at the ICCA International Finals in NYC, where he was personally recognized with a Vocal Percussion Award in 2004.
Ben has produced, recorded, composed, and organized three albums, including a live CD/DVD recorded at the Stone Mountain Arts Center. He has conducted numerous oversea tours including gigs in New Zealand, Australia, Laos, Canada, as well as throughout the US. He has also been selected to perform at multiple festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Portland Pride Festival, Old Port Festival, and Sarasota Arts Day Festival.
His many awards include being voted “Best of the Suncoast” in a 2010 Creative Loafing Newspaper Reader’s
Poll, song placement winner in the 2009 film “The Graduates,” was a 2008 finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, as well as a 2nd place finisher in the Solarfest Performing Songwriters’ Contest.
