Ben Hammond enjoyed four years in the spotlight as an actor/musician at Fryeburg Academy.
He was a member of the award winning Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Big Band. His talent as a singer, beat boxer, and bass player helped lead the groups to multiple first place finishes at State level competitions. During his senior year, he was recognized as the Best Male Vocalist at the Maine State Vocal Festival. An active member in drama productions, Ben won an individual award for his musical adaptation of “Wiley and the Hairy Man” at the Maine Regional One-Act Finals. Ben participated in Class One-Acts and all-school musicals throughout his Academy career. He also was a four-year member of the rock band, two-year member of the track and field team, and played football his freshman and sophomore years.

He continued his passion for music in college at McGill University, where he majored in music technology and jazz voice. He was a member of the McGill A Cappella group “Effusion”  who were group finalists at the ICCA International Finals in NYC, where he was personally recognized with a Vocal Percussion Award in 2004.

Ben has produced, recorded, composed, and organized three albums, including a live CD/DVD recorded at the Stone Mountain Arts Center. He has conducted numerous oversea tours including gigs in New Zealand, Australia, Laos, Canada, as well as throughout the US. He has also been selected to perform at multiple festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Portland Pride Festival, Old Port Festival, and Sarasota Arts Day Festival.

His many awards include being voted “Best of the Suncoast”  in a 2010 Creative Loafing Newspaper Reader’s 
Poll, song placement winner in the 2009 film “The Graduates,” was a 2008 finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, as well as a 2nd place finisher in the Solarfest Performing Songwriters’ Contest.

Ben continues to follow his passion and work as a self-employed musician, relying on his music performances and sales. He recently married Julie Brown and relocated from Sarasota, FL, to Denver, CO.

  • Academy Students Earn Silver and Bronze at the National FFA Convention

    From October 31 through November 3, five members of the Academy's FFA Chapter (Future Farmers of America) and faculty member Jennifer Solter Jones attended the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. 
  • FA's Falls Sports Assembly Honors Student-Athletes

    On Thursday, November 16th, Fryeburg Academy celebrated the fall sports season with its annual fall sports awards assembly held in the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center. The following student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding performance during the fall 2023-24 season:
     
  • Joseph R. Manning Installed as the Academy's 55th Head of School

    Fryeburg Academy and the Board of Trustees announce the installation of Joseph R. Manning as the Academy’s 55th head of school. The Installation Ceremony was held on Friday, November 3, 2023, with members of the Fryeburg Academy community, the Board of Trustees, and former head of school Erin P. Mayo in attendance as a guest speaker. Manning steps into this new leadership role during the school’s 232nd year, following a long-tenured and successful career at the Academy spanning twenty years of service. 
  • FA Students Earn Letters of Commendation in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program

    Fryeburg Academy seniors Tyler Bartick and Jiwon Choi have earned Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC) for their performance on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
