FA Attends the National High School Model United Nations in NYC
This year, 22 students traveled to New York City to attend the four-day National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) Conference on March 1-4. Now in its 45th year, the NHSMUN is the largest and most prestigious conference, hosting over 5000 participants from more than 75 countries and 300 schools. The New York-based conference-- surrounded by offices of Permanent Missions to the United Nations as well as the United Nations Headquarters itself--provides the perfect backdrop for a robust international affairs experience and a broadening of global issues awareness. Students are provided with an unparalleled opportunity to experience the theory and practice of international relations firsthand and have the opportunity to attend the opening or closing ceremonies in the UN General Assembly chamber, where actual diplomats convene every year.
The NHSMUN conference opened in the General Assembly chamber of the United Nations building on Friday night, March 1st, where FA students heard from opening speakers share the importance of advocating for under-represented people. Special guest speaker Anucha Browne, a former women’s basketball star, shared with the attendees how her career in the NBA and the harassment she experienced led her to work with UNICEF. Today, Browne works to equalize education and opportunity for women and girls.
At the conference, ten partner teams from FA sat in committee as representatives of the West African Nation of Congo, Brazzaville. They worked to tackle and find solutions for global issues such as promoting women’s education, improving access to water, combating terrorism in Southeast Asia, financing refugee resettlement programs, and preserving languages in danger of extinction.
To prepare for the conference, FA students researched and discussed these issues at the weekly Model UN club meetings and became very familiar with Congolese people and understanding the Congolese perspective on these types of global issues-- an important aspect of the MUN experience. Representing a country and people so vastly different from us gave the FA team real insights into the difficulty that the UN faces in bringing together so many divergent viewpoints.
At the end of the conference, in which dialogue often led to compromise, FA students discovered many potential resolutions to real-world problems. They also had the opportunity for many adventures in the city during their time in NYC that included walks in Central Park, a subway journey to Chinatown and Little Italy, as well as experiencing the daily sights and sounds of Manhattan. Thank you to our sponsors: the FA Boosters, MUN families, and Fryeburg Academy for supporting this amazing trip.
