‘Permission to play!’ – a collection of sculptures by Nantz Comyns is now on display at the Goldberg Gallery located in the Bion R. Cram Library at Fryeburg Academy.
Comyns is a sculptor and an illustrator whose artwork is currently exhibited in public sites and art galleries throughout New England. A Maine native, she earned a Master of Fine Art Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts.
“This collection of whimsical sculptures,” says Comyns, “is one of my fun creative facets. Generated from processing childhood trauma, I find an artistic outlet exploring inner landscapes.”
Comyns has traveled and worked extensively through the South Pacific, Europe, and USA. While backpacking in remote areas of the Pacific Islands, she had the privilege to work and live with many artisans and experience their cultural art forms first hand. This was the origin of Comyns recycling indigenous material into her sculptures.
As a touring artist, Comyns specializes in developing creative educational programs, based in her process of sculpture. A diverse and energetic artist, Comyns encourages creative collaboration among children to help them learn about their world and their relationship in it. Her birch twig moose and colorful papier mache’ sculptures can be found in hundreds public facilities and private collections throughout Maine! Comyns says, “The mythical magical creatures offer me a vehicle to share the ‘Process of Sculpture’ in workshops. The gift I share is eliciting your creative muse out to play with an abundance of materials and creative possibilities… then you have to make your choices to find your inner entities and landscapes.”
