HOS Community Update- March 23, 2020

March 23, 2020

Dear FA Families:

I write today with several information items.

First,we have been notified that a day student has COVID-19 symptoms and has been tested for the virus. The family is self-quarantined and awaiting the test results. They have informed us that their student has been at home since school ended on Thursday, March 12th, without any further public contact.

Please know that in these situations, as a school, we are not permitted to identify affected individuals. The Maine CDC has advised that school nurse Ellen Raynsford is to notify relevant classroom teachers and advisors when they have a student who may have been exposed or contracted the virus. Beyond this measure, when a person tests positive, it is the CDC who interviews the individual and then notifies other people with whom s/he had been in significant contact.

We are very grateful for the timely notifications we’ve received to-date from community members. It remains important to alert your local health provider and the Academy quickly if you or a family member may have been potentially exposed or are experiencing symptoms. You may reach our nurse, Ellen Raynsford, at 207-935-2001, x3136, or eraynsford@fryeburgacademy.org.

Second, Fryeburg Academy is extending the current remote learning period indefinitely. We certainly hope to be able to resume regular operations at some point prior to the end of the school year, but it’s clear that at this time, we can’t project a likely date of return. My administrative team will study otherwise regular spring and end-of-year events to determine adjustments that are possible and advisable.

Finally, a reminder of today’s second weekly pick-up arrangement for course materials and food provision from 2:30-4:30 pm: please be aware that the weekly food package is offered to any FA student who desires it. We will keep the same process as the last drive-thru pickup, requesting that families/students queue in the teacher’s parking lot and remain in their cars. As a precautionary measure meant to protect all present, we will provide gloves and masks to faculty and staff members who are doing the distribution and getting items to you in your cars.

I wish each and every FA community member health in body and spirit.

My best,

Erin P. Mayo
Head of School
