Bradley Backstage: Mr. Gus & The Latest Flames

Fryeburg Academy math teacher by day, honky-tonk bluesman by night, Erik Ray Gustafson is bringing his award-winning act to Bradley Backstage! As you will see, Erik is somewhat of a musical anomaly. Over the last 30 years as a professional musician and entertainer he has, among other things, built up his "one-man-band" act. He plays the guitar, mandolin, harmonica, kick drum (or his new favorite: the cajon), hi-hat, upright bass and accordion—mostly simultaneously. Although he usually advertises his music as honky-tonk blues, it really encompasses many more genres. In his own words he says, "I love delta blues, Chicago blues, jump and swing, old country from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, 1960s rock, zydeco, a smattering of jazz and folk, polkas, and anything else that moves me at the time." As a special treat, "Mr. Gus" will be accompanied by The Latest Flames—a blues band made up of Fryeburg Academy student musicians. Bradley Backstage seats the audience on stage with the performers, creating a much more intimate and unforgettable live concert experience.

Wilson, best known for his appearances on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion and collaborations with singer/songwriter Heather Masse, will be accompanied by saxophonist Mike Sakash. Mike has performed, recorded, and toured with the Phoenix Jazz Project and the Traverser Saxophone Quartet, in addition to being a regular member of the Portland Jazz Orchestra. His latest recording project included legendary bebop alto saxophonist, Richie Cole, and Maynard Ferguson’s longtime trombonist, Reggie Watkins. The CD, titled, “Wood Dance” is scheduled for release in June 2017. Currently, Mike is the music department chair at Fryeburg Academy, where he directs the instrumental ensembles and teaches courses in music theory, guitar, and jazz improvisation.
