Hubert Wentworth Clemons '47

Hubert Wentworth Clemons, 90, formerly of Hiram, Maine, passed away
on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Memorial Hospital in No. Conway, N.H.
He was born in Brownfield, on Jan. 27, 1929, the son of Hubert A. Wentworth and Cora
Butterfield Wentworth of Hiram. His parents divorced and subsequently, he was legally adopted
by his stepfather, Lloyd R. Clemons of Hiram.
He graduated from the Mt. Cutler School in Hiram, from Fryeburg Academy, where he was a
member of the National Honor Society, and from the University of Maine at Orono. He was a
member of Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Delta Pi, both honor societies on the collegiate level, and
received both a Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s degree from U.M.O.
Hubert served in the U.S. Army as Chaplain’s Assistant during the Korean War. Returning to
Maine, he taught for 25 years in elementary schools including Brownfield, Hiram, Sebago,
Buxton, and Limington, as well as English and French at Potter Academy and Andover High
School.
He traveled by bus across the United States on a sightseeing tour one summer. He also
enjoyed swimming, boating, and waterskiing at his camp on Barker Pond with family and
friends.
Hubert had a good ear for music and played in a small orchestra in his high school years. He
could play anything from classical to jazz, the organ as well as the piano. For many years he
served as the Sunday church organist in Hiram, gratis.
After retirement, Hubert became interested in genealogy and established the Hiram Historical
Society, which is thriving today. He became the “Town Historian” and corresponded and met
with people looking for help with ancestry locally and from afar.
The town of Hiram honored him with the Hubert W. Clemons award, now given yearly to a
participant who has shown similar devotion to the town of Hiram. On July 4th, 1999, Hubert was
named Grand Marshall as part of the bicentennial celebration.
He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Dr. Phillip A. Cole. Hubert leaves behind his beloved
sister, Charlotte A. W. Cole of Cape Elizabeth; along with two nieces, Dulcie Hayes and her
husband, Tim Hayes of Scarborough, and Penny Skillin and her husband George Skillin of
Kennebunk; and nephew, Dr. Bert Cole of North Hampton, N.H.; and close cousins, Carmen
Doughty of Fryeburg and Sally Brown of Buxton.
Donations in his memory may be made to Hiram Historical Society, 20 Historical Ridge, Hiram,
