May Term

Hands-On Learning

May Term at Fryeburg Academy is the hands-on, action-oriented interval with which the Academy concludes its school year for grades 9-11. For three weeks, students focus on project and performance-oriented study, community service, off-campus experiences, and travel. A recent May Term sampling includes classes in global investment, interior design, Mediterranean cooking, robotics, 3-D animation, and ballroom dancing.

Guidelines

  • Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors take May Term classes
  • Courses meet every day for one period unless otherwise noted
  • Courses are worth 0.25 credits per period unless otherwise noted
  • A few courses meet more than one period and are worth more credits
  • All students take a balanced schedule approved by their dean
  • All students must take one credit’s worth of May Term courses (full schedule)
  • There are no “Honors/AP” weighted courses during May Term
  • Courses have letter grades; they are not Pass/Fail. Courses and grades appear on transcripts and are included in GPA calculations
  • Students may not take a May Term course more than once
  • A credit recovery course will be offered in math. Students who failed either fall or spring semester, but had an average greater than 50%, can take these courses. If successful, they will recover the 0.5 credits they did not earn during the semester.
  • Certain courses in May Term are considered a prerequisite for the next school year’s courses. Please check with the instructor if there is a conflict in your schedule.
