  • Special Education Teacher

    Fryeburg Academy, a 580-student day and boarding high school in Western Maine and the Mount Washington Valley, seeks an innovative Special Education teacher beginning September 2018.  This full-time position involves meeting the academic and social/emotional needs for a caseload of identified special education students as a member of each student's wrap around team. The candidate will be highly organized, possess excellent interpersonal skills, and demonstrate the ability to provide effective, specialized instruction.

    Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience and developed, varied strategies for teaching special education students.  Fryeburg faculty have significant responsibilities connected with the school's boarding program and extracurricular offerings. The Academy is therefore looking for individuals who enjoy working with high school students both in and out of the classroom and who wish, through commitment to a variety of roles, to strengthen its community. Experience working with students outside of the classroom- tutoring, coaching, in a residential or camp setting, or as an activity advisor- is a plus.
     
    Qualifying Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree; MDOE 282 certification or eligibility for Maine certification, if not certified in Maine
    Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions:

    • Ability to establish positive, supportive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
    • Ability to write quality IEPs in a timely manner, including data-driven, observable, and measurable goals
    • Skill in planning and delivering differentiated instruction and assessment to meet students’ IEP goals
    • Ability to work with, encourage, and inspire students to seek continuous growth
    • Ability to establish positive, supportive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
    • Demonstrated, pro-active skills in communication and problem-solving
    • Detail orientation and developed organizational habits
    • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while maintaining high professional standards
    • A willingness to work with students of all backgrounds and abilities
    • A desire to work with students both in and out of the classroom. In particular, a willingness to serve as an academic advisor for a group of 10-12 students for their four years of high school.

  • Teaching Intern, Science

     Fryeburg Academy, a 580-student day and boarding high school in Western Maine and the Mount Washington Valley, seeks an outstanding beginning or early-career teacher who prizes hard work and professionalism and who seeks instructional training and mentoring. The successful candidate will assume duties in August 2018. This position involves teaching two or three sections of science and participating in the Academy’s residential program as a dorm parent. Teaching assignments will include either A.P. Biology or A.P. Chemistry, so a relevant content-area major or comparable experience is a must. The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for working with students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and with a range of academic interests and skills.
     
    FA faculty have significant responsibilities connected with the school's boarding program and extracurricular offerings. The Academy is therefore looking for individuals who enjoy working with high school students both in and out of the classroom and who wish to strengthen its community. Pre-career experience working with adolescents-- e.g., as a tutor, coach, camp counselor-- is a plus.
     
    FA teaching interns work closely with veteran faculty mentors. Attendance at a week-long 2018 summer institute for new AP teachers is a requirement. The Academy will fund this training.
     
    Qualifying Education and Experience:
    Bachelor’s Degree in a science major or in education with a science concentration.
