Met Opera Live in HD: Samson et Dalila

When mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna joined forces for a new production of Carmen at the Met, the results were electrifying. Now this star duo reunites for another sensual French opera when they open the season in the title roles of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila. Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2014 for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, makes his Met debut directing a vivid, seductive staging, featuring a monumental setting for the last-act Temple of Dagon, where the hero crushes his Philistine enemies. Sir Mark Elder conducts the first new Met production of the work in 20 years. Estimated run time: 3 hrs, 4 mins. Joe De Vito will be hosting his free Opera Lecture Series on Thursday, October 18th at 3 pm in the LHE/PAC seminar room.

Pace Galleries Opening Reception: Inside and Out

The Pace Galleries of Art presents the opening reception for Inside and Out: Landscapes and Still Life Paintings by Jon Marshall. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibition is a collection of oil paintings from the studio of Jon Marshall. The “Inside” portion of this show is comprised mainly of various still lifes and works from the imagination, while the “Outside” is a collection of scenes from Maine, the Catskills in New York, and the Canadian Maritimes. Marshall paints in a classical realist manner, inspired by 17th century Dutch and 19th century Hudson River school painters, sometimes employing a more contemporary twist as he integrates the painting composition into his frames. He is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, has been represented by galleries nation-wide, the founding Artist in Residence at the Denmark Arts Center (9 years), and a May Term oil painting instructor at Fryeburg Academy (5 years). Jon Marshall resides and works in Denmark, Maine with his wife Kristi and their children, who are Fryeburg Academy alumni and students.

Following the opening, the exhibition will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm (when Fryeburg Academy is in session). To schedule a viewing at a different time, please call the box office at 207-935-9232, or email boxoffice@fryeburgacademy.org.
