• Fryeburg Academy Students Recognized at 27th Annual Berklee Jazz Festival

  This year marks the 27th year of the Berklee Jazz Festival held in Boston, MA and the nearly three decades that Fryeburg Academy’s award-winning music program has participated in the prestigious event. 2019 also marks the end of an era for the festival: after 51 years of operation by Berklee College of Music, the college announced the festival’s suspension this year to reallocate funds towards financial aid.

• Julian Zhu '21 Receives Honorable Mention at 2019 Maine Regional Scholastic Awards

  For many individuals, finding one’s passion in life takes a lifetime...unless your Julian Zhu ‘21 who some would argue was born with a camera holstered to his hip. Zhu is in his second year at Fryeburg Academy and transferred from his California school where he was first introduced to photography as a member of the yearbook team. Since then both his interest and skill level in photography have increased dramatically.

• Fryeburg Academy’s Robotics Team Headed to the State Championship

  Fryeburg Academy is excited to announce that its newly-formed robotics team is headed to the State Championship after winning first place at the Southern Maine Vex Robotics League finals at Cape Elizabeth High School on Tuesday, January 22.

  The story of students arriving from China to learn the English language and experience American culture is a familiar one at Fryeburg Academy. The story of Gunnar Gurnis, a Fryeburg resident who traveled to China to learn Mandarin and experience Chinese culture, is a rare one.

   

• SILVIA SANCHEZ SERRA ‘19: Here, There, and Everywhere

  If you saw Silvia Sanchez Serra on campus her first year at Fryeburg Academy, chances are good that she was running. One of the most universally engaged students in the Fryeburg Academy student body, Silvia needed to run to all her meetings, practices, and competitions in order to be on time. Residential life director Jessica Brooks recalls the image of Silvia getting from one activity to another, “During her first year here everyone used to laugh because Silvia ran full speed everywhere she went. This year she said that she has realized that it is ok to just walk.”

• STUDENT PROFILE: Celine Jing Lyu’19

  Now in her fourth year at FA, Celine is a member of our Residential Honors Program and has made the High Honor Roll every semester. As a leader on campus, she is Captain of the Math Team and a Dorm Proctor. Celine’s advice to students: “Get out of your comfort zone. There are a lot of opportunities to explore (at FA), and even if you don’t push yourself, there will always be someone encouraging you here, saying, you can do it!”

• Fryeburg Academy’s Music Program Presents Annual Candlelight Concerts

  On Sunday, December 9th, Fryeburg Academy’s music program presents its annual Candlelight Concerts at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at the Leura-Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on Bradley Street in Fryeburg, Maine.  The Candlelight Concert is one of Fryeburg Academy’s oldest traditions, combining holiday music and readings in a seamless program. Nearly 80 students are involved in this year’s performance, bringing together Fryeburg Academy’s chorus, band, and chamber music ensembles.  Holiday favorites include Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” and “Hallelujah” from Handel’s Messiah. The Fryeburg Academy band will feature in Robert W. Smith’s “Celtic Carol,” which is inspired by the dance and rhythmic energy of a traditional Irish holiday celebration.  The chorus is excited to perform Buddy Kaye and Jules Loman’s “Christmas Alphabet,” reminiscent of the similar harmony of the McGuire sisters.  The audience is invited to join the chorus and band in singing “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “We Three Kings,” “Still, Still, Still,” and  “Joy to the World.”  Also, alumni and FA community members are invited to join in the third annual Hallelujah chorus sing along.  Admission is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted.  Doors open 30 minutes before each performance.

   

• 5th Annual Fryeburg Academy Capstone Concert Presents Jazz Residency Vocalist Kim Nazaria

  Over the last several years it has become a tradition at Fryeburg Academy to bring an internationally recognized jazz artist to campus for three days to work with Fryeburg Academy’s music students.  In past years Grammy-award winning artists such as Darmon Meader, Karrin Allyson, Laurence Hobgood, and Dave Pietro have coached and performed with Fryeburg Academy students. 

• Tucker Buzzell ’19 Earns Campbell Conference Class C South Player of the Year

  Tucker Buzzell ’19 has been named the 2018 Campbell Conference Player of the Year.  The award was presented at the league banquet on Sunday, November 18. Also, FA’s head coach David Turner and assistant coach David Jones were named the Campbell Conference Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year, respectively.

   

• 2018 Fall Sports Awards Night

  On Wednesday, November 14, the 2018 Fall Sports Awards Night was held at the Harvey Dow Gibson Athletic Center to recognize outstanding student-athletes who played during the fall season. Eight different sports were represented along with 197 student-athletes and their respective coaches who attended the evening’s event with family and friends.

   

• FA Honored as a National Banner Unified Champion School

  Fryeburg Academy is excited to announce its recognition as a 2018 National Unified Champion School.  On Tuesday, October 23, Special Olympics representatives Lise Bird and Ian Frank, Director of Special Olympics Unified Sports in Maine, presented the Academy with the Unified Champion banner at the all-school assembly.  Students, faculty, and staff celebrated the event with music from FA’s band, balloons, and a video compilation that included a message to the Academy from the Chairman of Special Olympics, Tim Shriver.

   

• Fryeburg Academy Presents Guest Speaker: NASA Engineer Gary Golnik

  Fryeburg Academy is pleased to present former NASA Optical Systems Engineer, Gary Golnik, as its next speaker on Thursday, November 8, at 11:45 a.m. in the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center. Mr. Golnik's presentation will be on the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2021, which he spent 20 years of his career working on.  The JWST telescope is slated to be 100 times more powerful than the current Hubble Space Telescope and will have the potential to advance astronomers understanding of the birth of our galaxies and to discover new planets and stars.   About the Speaker:
  Gary Golnik recently retired after 20 years as an optical systems engineer for the NASA James Webb Space Telescope. He was responsible for the optical performance of the telescope, developing procedures to align critical components, and analysis of test data to verify performance. Prior to working for NASA, Mr. Golnik developed high energy laser technology. He was recently awarded the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal.

  Q. Where did you grow up and why you decide to attend Fryeburg Academy?

  A. I grew up in a small fishing town 30 minutes away from Barcelona. It’s a small community, yet I am close to a really big city which I think is a really great way to grow up. My cousin came previously to Fryeburg and he gave me a really positive review so I had no doubt, hearing what he said, that I wanted to come here.

   

• 44th Annual FATA Craft Fair on November 18th

  Fryeburg Academy Teachers Association, FATA, is preparing for the 44th Annual Craft Fair at the Wadsworth Arena at Fryeburg Academy on Sunday, November 18th from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.  Proceeds will help fund scholarships awarded to students entering the field of education and other educational programs.

• STUDENT PROFILE: Jiawen "Jack" Liu '19

  Q.  Where did you grow up and why you decide to attend Fryeburg Academy?
  
  A. I grew up in Beijing China. It is the capital of China and a very crowded city. As you can imagine, I grew up in a city setting and both my parents and I wanted me to go to a place that is quiet enough for studying. There are too many distractions in big cities. I applied to Fryeburg Academy and went on an amazing tour, so I chose FA. The tour guide was really nice and helpful, and I was amazed by all the musical and athletic awards that the Academy had won. Before I came here, I thought Fryeburg was just a quiet town and that the school would have a  really small campus and not many facilities. But after I had a tour of the school, I saw Fryeburg Academy had many beautiful facilities like the PAC (Performing Arts Center) which is amazing and we have a vast library that other schools probably don’t have. It’s a beautiful campus.

• Dr. Wesley T. Huntress, Former NASA Associate Administrator for Space Science, to Speak at FA

  On Thursday, September 27th at 9 a.m., Dr. Wesley T. Huntress will speak at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center, speaking on the recent developments in planetary science that resulted from NASA missions and other space programs. The presentation will be live-streamed on FA's official Facebook page.

• FA's Summer 2018 Campus Improvement Projects

  When schools go quiet in June, July, and August, life tends to get very busy for their building and maintenance crews as they use the season to tackle campus projects. This reality is particularly visible at Fryeburg Academy this summer, where numerous campus improvements are underway.

• FA to Build the first Maine CubeSat Satellite in Collaboration with the Maine Space Consortium

  We are pleased to announce that Dr. Warren Ziegler, a physics teacher at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Maine, recently gave a presentation to the Maine Space Grant’s summer interns on Friday, June 22, at the Senator Inn and Spa in Augusta. Dr. Ziegler’s presentation was on the Academy’s initiative to build and orbit a small satellite (CubeSat).  A CubeSat is a type of miniaturized satellite that weighs about 3 pounds and has dimensions of 4x4x4 inches. CubeSats are a cost-effective platform for science investigations, new technology demonstrations and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. CubeSats are put in orbit by deployers on the International Space Station or launched as a secondary payload on a launch vehicle. To date, NASA has selected 149 CubeSat missions from 85 unique organizations representing 38 States and the District of Columbia.  Fryeburg Academy’s CubeSat will be the first satellite built in Maine.

   

• FA Girls’ Ski Teams Sweep Nordic and Alpine Maine Class A State Ski Championships

  It was a winning season for Fryeburg Academy girl’s Nordic and alpine ski teams, earning back-to-back state championships. The championship was the first one for the girls’ Nordic team since 1987. The race was held at Black Mountain in Rumford, ME, utilizing a different format.  FA Coach John Weston cited the race’s new format as a positive change: “Some of the conferences have been doing this format [starting lineups based on the distance from the finish line from the classical race] for a couple of years, and they really wanted to push it through to the state level. It made for some exciting racing.”

   

• FA’s OLRC Erects 30-Foot Climbing Wall and Low Ropes Course

  “It’s been two years in the planning,” says Joel Rhymer, director of the outdoor learning and research center. “Despite the structure’s recent installation near the school garden and barn, the Academy has had a long history of providing students opportunities for challenge and adventure using ropes and course activities for the past 20 years. The new structure is a renewal and stronger commitment to the program.”

   

• FA Jazz Program Earns Gold at State Jazz Festivals

  On April 6 and 7, the Fryeburg Academy jazz ensembles wrapped up another successful season. Under the direction of Mimi Rohlfing, the bands attended the Maine Music Educator’s State Vocal Jazz Festival at Stearns Junior/Senior High School in Millinocket, ME, to compete against other Division I groups.

  Nico Zakon ‘21 and Aaron Zakon ‘22 were accepted to present their projects at the IEEE Integrated STEM Education Conference (ISEC) held at Princeton University on March 11, 2018.

  We are pleased to announce that Fryeburg Academy inducted 33 new inductees to the B.W. Tinker Chapter of the National  Honor Society on Wednesday, March 14. Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student.

• FA Math Instructor, Erik Gustafson, Performs at the 2018 International Blues Challenge Competition

  For Erik Gustafson who also goes by the stage names of “Shelterbelt Slim” and the self-proclaimed cowboy name of “Erik Fingers Ray,” competing in the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis, TN last month was not the first time he received such acclaimed recognition.

• Gwen Boros ‘20 Named as Principal Horn for the 2018 All New England Festival Orchestra

  The prestigious All-New England Festival Orchestra named Gwen Boros ‘20 as a first chair for the French horn—a first for Fryeburg Academy.

• FA's Award-Winning Vocal Jazz Ensemble Places 3rd at the 50th Annual Berklee High School Jazz Festival

  We are pleased to announce that Fryeburg Academy’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble won the third prize at the 50th Annual Berklee High School Jazz Festival on February 10.  The vocal jazz ensemble has won the Berklee Jazz Festival three times and placed in the top three numerous times in the past 26 years.

  Harry enrolled at Fryeburg Academy during the second semester of his sophomore year. He was the first international student to receive a college acceptance. In November, Harry learned he was accepted to the prestigious Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington.
  
  

   

• "Save So You Can" Video by Thad Thorne '21 Wins Norway Savings Bank's Regional Video Competition

  This past December, Norway Savings Bank announced the winner of its 2017 "Lights, Camera, Save!" video contest--Thad Thorne ‘21 from Fryeburg Academy. The win earned Thorne a 250 dollar scholarship from Norway Savings Bank and entry in the national contest for a chance to win an additional $5000 scholarship.

• Friendship and a Mutual Love of Art Sparks a Whimsical Art Installation for Two FA Seniors

  For seniors Finn Lane ‘18 and Eiligh Orff ‘18, their friendship spans as far back as elementary school where they grew up together and discovered their love for art. Naturally, it was a perfect fit to create a collaborative art installation when their art teacher, Mr. Poulan, approached the two about the project. “I was initially working by myself making some winter-themed headpieces,” says Eiligh Orff ‘18 smiling at Finn.

  Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself, where did you grow up and why did you decide to attend FA?

  
  A: I was born in a small city in Vietnam and then I moved to Ho Chi Minh City, which is a larger city when I was 11-years-old. I went to an international school from 6th through 11th grade. I decided to come to Fryeburg Academy because I thought it would be a good experience to try something new. Coming during my senior year is a bit late, but it is fun and good preparation for college life.

  We are pleased to announce that Fryeburg Academy’s Head Football Coach David Turner has been named the 2017  Class “C” Campbell Conference Coach of the Year.  Turner was recognized on Sunday, November 19 at the All-Star Banquet held each year by the Campbell Conference to recognize outstanding athletes and coaches in each class.

• STUDENT PROFILE: (Jennifer) Yu Chieh Huang

  Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself: where you grew up and why you decided to attend FA?

  
  

  A: I came to FA as a sophomore, and I am now a senior. This is my third year at the Academy, and I feel like the time has passed really fast. I am from Taiwan, and I moved to China when I was in the first grade. I lived there with my family for nine years. I went to international schools my whole life, which is why I have good English skills. It was a hard adjustment to make between living in Taiwan and living in China, especially as I switched schools several times because my mom wanted to make sure I had the very best opportunities. Despite the difficulty in attending several different schools in China and Taiwan, the transitions helped me to become more adaptable to change.

  FRYEBURG — A high school football game just isn’t complete without a band.
  
  

  The Fryeburg Academy band will be performing both on the field and in the stands at several of the Raiders’ football games this season.
  
  

  “At the football games, the band keeps the crowd involved in the action on the field,” said band director Mike Sakash. “I also feel the band supports a feeling of school pride and spirit.”

• Tennis and More: Leadership Spotlight on Jeremy Angell ‘99

  FA's four new competition tennis courts, located on Howe Street, are ready to see some action come this fall. The competition tennis courts, which were partially funded by a generous grant from the Kendal C. & Anna Ham Charitable Foundation, are a much-needed addition to the campus.  The new courts afford FA's tennis teams the advantage of practicing and playing games on a familiar court rather than having to travel to ones nearby.

   

• 32 Fryeburg Academy Students Earn Advanced Placement Scholar Awards in 2017

  We are pleased to announce that the College Board has conferred AP Scholar Awards upon 32 Fryeburg Academy students this year, recognizing college-level achievement on AP examinations for 22 students designated as AP Scholars, four further as AP Scholars with Honor, and six as AP Scholars with Distinction.
  

• Installation of New Sprinkler Systems Offer Efficiency in Irrigation

  One of the campus improvement projects completed this month is the installation of sprinkler systems on the FA campus. Thirsty Turf Irrigation based in Gorham, Maine did the install. The new irrigation systems were installed on all of FA’s athletic fields as well as the flower gardens, located in front of the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center and the Harvey Dow Gibson Athletic Center.

• Mountain Center’s Strength and Conditioning Program Grows in Popularity at FA

  For the second summer, the strength and conditioning program at Fryeburg Academy — run by Mountain Center Performance Fitness — has become an increasingly popular offering with student-athletes. The Academy has contracted with Mountain Center for athletic training services for many years and expanded the partnership in 2015 to include a strength and conditioning program for students.

  The Fryeburg Academy boys’ and girls’ track teams ventured to Yarmouth High School for the Class B State Meet on Saturday, and it turned out to be a banner day for the hometown Raiders, who brought home the Class B Sportsmanship banners for both teams.

• Poland Spring Donates Gravity-Fed Irrigation System to Fryeburg Academy

  We are pleased to announce the recent installation of a gravity-fed irrigation system donated by Poland Spring. On Wednesday, May 24, Poland Spring Natural Resource Manager Mark Dubois along with his team, Mark Laplante, Ed Luetje and Poland Spring summer intern Mary Everette, were on-hand to speak with FA students about the art of well drilling.

• Gillian Brosnan '17: The Pursuit of Art

  For Gillian Brosnan ‘17, her love for art first took shape in the form of illustrations. In middle school, Brosnan discovered a fondness for creative writing and was compelled to illustrate the characters in her stories, which later evolved into portraits. “I really like to draw portraits in graphite and charcoal,” says Brosnan. “In this medium, you can get realistic skin tones. I also work with watercolor, painting with lighter colors and graduating to darker ones.”

• Student Profile: MIKE TIANFANG CHEN '17

  Mike Tianfang Chen ‘17 began his high school career at Fryeburg Academy in the 9th grade. As a Fryeburg Academy Scholar with Distinction (granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams), Mike’s college decision is between two very competitive schools — Babson College and Lehigh University. When asked what advice he would give to other students, Mike replied, “Don’t stay in your comfort zone.Talk to people from other countries and cultures ... try something new and enjoy your time here, because it goes really quickly.”

• Student Profile: ERIK PORTER '17

  Erik Porter ‘17 began his high school career at Fryeburg Academy in the 9th grade and will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the fall. With an 8% acceptance rate, MIT is one of the most selective science, technology, and engineering schools in the US. When asked what advice he would give to other students, Erik replied, "Set goals and take advantage all of the clubs, activities, and courses offered at FA. There aren't many schools like FA, and I have tried to take advantage of all the opportunities the Academy has provided me.

  Taylor Kruger, a senior at Fryeburg Academy, has been selected to receive the 2017 Principal’s Award, Head of School Erin P. Mayo announced. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic excellence, outstanding school citizenship, and leadership.

• Marketing a Maine Blueberry Farm Through Project-based Learning

  On the coast sits Roque Bluffs, where the rich and rocky fields of quintessential Downeast Maine are known for their blueberries. Since 1912, the Welch Farm has been harvesting blueberries for several generations by the Hanscom family. The farm was named after Wayne Hanscom’s grandfather, Frank Welch.

  A: I’m originally from Nepal and moved to America almost seven years ago. My family now lives in Everett, MA. I’ve spent all four years here at Fryeburg Academy and lived in Frye Hall the whole time!

  Fryeburg Academy will host its annual Candlelight Concerts on Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on Bradley Street in Fryeburg, ME.

• Barry Woodbrey '62 - Defying All Odds

  For Barry Woodbrey ‘62, attending high school during the Vietnam era was no small feat for young men like himself who were constantly faced with being drafted for the war. Fortunately for  him, Woodbrey was able to complete all four years at FA, graduating in 1962.

• Lisa Luedeke '81 Visits Campus to Present Her Debut Novel Smashed and the Art of Storytelling

  On Tuesday, December 6, alumna Lisa Luedeke '81, presented the art of storytelling and shared with FA students the building blocks like imagination, observation, and research that are essential to crafting an engaging story.

  FRYEBURG — It was a record-setting day for members of the Fryeburg Academy cross-county teams on Saturday. Alfie Walker, the lone male Raider, and all seven members of the girls' team ran personal bests at the Class B State Meet in Belfast, Maine.
  
  

• Maine Youth in Government Offers FA Students First-Hand Experience with Legislative Process

  On Friday, November 11-13, Associate Director of Admission Beth Ross and seven students from Fryeburg Academy participated in the YMCA Maine Youth in Government conference--a national program of the YMCA. 150 students from across the state rallied at the Maine State House where they held a student-driven mock legislative session.

• FA's Football Team Wins Class C South Sportsmanship Award

• Fryeburg Gold Takes First Place at Meet

  Fryeburg Gold captured first place at their meet on Wednesday, October 5th with 318 points, followed by Hebron Academy with 245 points.

• FA's Golf Team Earns South B Sportsmanship Award & Qualifies for Team State Championship

  We are pleased to announce that FA’s golf team qualified for the Class B Team State Championships held on Saturday, October 8th at the Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro, ME. The team’s record for the regular season was 7-4-1, finishing in 7th place at States, where they were also honored with the South B Sportsmanship Award.

• Mackenzie Buzzell '17 Selected as One of 20 Finalists for the 2016-17 Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program

  We are pleased to announce that Mackenzie Buzzell ‘17 of Fryeburg Academy has been selected one of 20 finalists for the 2016-17 Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program from across New England by Positive Coaching Alliance-New England (PCA-NE).

   

• Cultural Exploration, Sustainability, and Leadership: Summertime at Fryeburg Academy

  What's more quintessential than summertime in New England? Nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains, Fryeburg Academy recently expanded its program to include a new, two-week summer term for students in grades 8-12.

  
  

   

• FA’s Revamped School Store Offers More Than Just Spirit Wear

  If you’ve got ‘Raider pride’ and want to traverse around campus in a snazzy new sweatshirt — or perhaps even replace an old toothbrush — you’re now in luck. Chief Financial Officer, Jeremy Angell, and Student Accounts Administrator, Barbara Swayze, recently led the efforts in relocating the school store this summer from its former home in the Alumni building, to its current location in the main building on the second floor.

   

• Summer Improvements to Campus Life, More on the Horizon

  This summer, the campus was abuzz with work crews and heavy equipment with the installation of a new, recreational tennis and basketball court near the Payson-Mulford and Hastings dormitories. This project is among many in recent months to improve campus life by providing more opportunities for student activities and gatherings.

  
  

   

• 41 Fryeburg Academy Students Earn AP Scholar Awards in 2016

  We are pleased to announce that the College Board has conferred AP Scholar Awards upon 41 Fryeburg Academy students this year, recognizing college-level achievement on AP examinations for 25 students designated as AP Scholars, five further as AP Scholars with Honor, and 11 as Scholars with Distinction.
