Mountain Center’s Strength and Conditioning Program Grows in Popularity at FA
For the second summer, the strength and conditioning program at Fryeburg Academy — run by Mountain Center Performance Fitness — has become an increasingly popular offering with student-athletes. The Academy has contracted with Mountain Center for athletic training services for many years and expanded the partnership in 2015 to include a strength and conditioning program for students.
“Compared to last year, the number of students participating has increased quite a bit,” says Brylie Walker ’10, FA alum and Mountain Center’s strength and conditioning coach. “They seem more interested in the program this year, and I’m seeing a consistency in who is showing up which is good.”
Athletic Director Sue Thurston added, “The importance of this type of offering for our student-athletes is evident in the statistics. Students who participate in the program recover much quicker, have better core strength, and are much stronger during the season.”
The strength and conditioning program offers two sessions a week for FA students: Monday-Friday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. and 4:00-5:30 p.m. and one session for middle school students on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00-9:00 a.m.
“It’s really about learning a life-skill,” continues Walker ‘10. “The program not only helps to reduce injuries but gets kids more comfortable about going to a fitness center and becoming more knowledgeable about using the equipment correctly.”
In addition to this program, Mountain Center offers three-afternoon fitness classes and an afterschool fitness program for FA students.
