At Fryeburg Academy, our Specialty Programs give students hands-on, experiential learning that brings classroom concepts to life.
Whether through internships, the Outdoor Adventure Program, Aviation, or other immersive experiences, students develop practical skills, explore real-world applications, and deepen their understanding of the subjects they’re passionate about.

Outdoor Adventure
Fryeburg Academy's Outdoor Adventure Program, led by our Outdoor Learning & Research Center (OLRC), is a cornerstone of experiential learning, rooted in adventure and personal growth. Through snow sports, hiking, paddling, overnight expeditions, and immersive outdoor experiences, students challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop leadership skills in real-world settings.
May Term
May Term is the perfect opportunity for students to explore a variety of subjects that they might not have access to in other semesters. With over 80 interdisciplinary and experiential offerings, May Term is an authentic way to gain exposure to new topics and engage in hands-on learning. This three-week term is scheduled at the end of the school year, providing students with a unique chance to expand their horizons and deepen their understanding.
Certificate Programs
Fryeburg Academy's Certificate programs offer extensive coursework and extracurricular opportunities for students to explore their interests in-depth. With three distinct certificates in Arts, Adventure Education, and Research Design, students can specialize in their chosen field and work on capstone projects like award-winning songs, custom-designed coloring books, and national prize-winning science projects that tackle real-world problems. Upon completing the program, students receive a certificate demonstrating their expertise in their field.
Computer Science, Aviation, & Technology
Ready to turn your passion for innovation into real-world skills? The Computer Science, Aviation, & Technology Program offers hands-on learning across three focused tracks—Aviation, Electrical, and Technology—providing students with practical experience and a head start in college or career pathways.
Work Coop + Internships
Discover your potential and gain real-world experience with our Work Co-op or Internship program! Our internship program offers junior and senior students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their field of interest. You'll develop skills that will set you apart from others in the job market and broaden your knowledge of potential career paths. Upon completion, you'll give a formal presentation and receive .25 or .50 credits, depending on your weekly time commitment. The program lasts for one semester, with the possibility of an extension.
Technical Arts
Fryeburg Academy has an exceptional Technical Arts program that provides students with hands-on experience in woodworking and machine fabrication. This program is comprehensive and aims to equip students with various skills and techniques needed for working with wood, metal, and plastic materials.
