May Term Offerings

This course is open to students who have taken Intro Rock Band, or students who have participated in other instrumental ensembles at Fryeburg Academy. Students will develop a set list, and rehearse each day to prepare music to perform on Water Wheel Stage at the Fryeburg Fair the following fall. During May term Advanced Rock Band will also perform on campus for Molly Ockett's Alternative Learning Day.

A hands on writing workshop where students will draft, edit, and revise their own stories, learning the basics of creative writing as an art form.

This May Term sculpture course will center around the use of clay to express and evoke emotion through portrayal of human and animal forms. Students will learn various clay sculpture methods to build their own creations, which will be kiln fired and then painted and/or glazed.

What is Felting?
Dating back to 8,000 B.C. this is the oldest form of textile arts on Earth. Whether you are a novice or a pro, felting is easy to learn and a great way to unwind. Join Felting 101 if you are a BEGINNER to learn more about this creative art form or as an ADVANCED artist if would like to improve your felting skills. We will learn the basics of wool needle, wet and 3-D (sculpture) felting with small to miniature projects.

You will create a minimum of two 3-d needle felted sculptures, two flat needle felting art works, and one wet felted item.

A final project of your choosing will include using one of the techniques learned previously or in class.

A film-making class that focuses more on the cinematography and technical aspects of film- making. The class will explore techniques such as composition, Depth of Field, Exposure, Framing and more. For the final, students will pair up in groups and create a short film that is shot using unique cinematography techniques.
 

No music experience is needed to take this course. Students will learn about the rich history of film music, beginning in the golden era of 1930's film, which serves as the foundation for film music in today's popular and independent films. In class students will learn to identify composers and types of instruments by ear. Students will also learn about the filmmaking process, and how directors and film composers work together to produce a film score that tells the story of the film.

A Karaoke-style singing/playing contest in the style of America's got talent where students will perform in front of a panel of judges at the end of a week of preparation. each student will perform one or more song(s) for the class and receive a score from the judges. The week leading up to the contest will consist of individual practice and coaching to prepare.
 

Explore the fascinating fusion of math and creativity in Geometric Art! Unleash your inner artist as we embark on a journey through the fascinating world of optical illusions, symmetric creations, collage masterpieces, and mesmerizing tessellations. You will discover the hidden mathematical patterns that underlie captivating artworks, and turn abstract concepts into vibrant visual expressions! No math or art skill is required to succeed in this class, but be prepared and willing to work on hands-on art projects each day.
 

In this course we will jump into the exciting world of watercolor painting. Starting from the very basics, students will learn different watercolor techniques, will practice applying those techniques to create both quick sketches and longer paintings, and will explore a variety of ways to have fun with this medium. Watercolor is a style of painting that is portable, easy to use anywhere, exciting to work with, and often full of surprises. Students will learn about concepts such as value and color, and how they can be used in watercolor painting. They will also learn about different painting techniques that can allow us to make the objects that we paint look solid, or to convey different textures or light effects in our paintings. The focus of this class will be on developing a toolbox of skills in this specific medium that can allow students to find their own style, make their own artistic choices, and express themselves through their paintings.
 

Are you interested in tabletop games like D&D or Warhammer? Are you creatively inclined? Then sign up to learn more about the wonderful world of miniature painting! In this class, you will learn how to build, base, and paint miniatures (models). Those interested will also have an opportunity to learn more about 3D printing software.

In this dynamic three-week course, students will explore the art of mixed media collage, combining various materials, textures, and techniques to create visually compelling compositions. Through a series of guided assignments and personal explorations, you will develop an understanding of composition, layering, and storytelling within their artwork.

Each week, you will engage in both structured projects and self-directed work, allowing them to experiment with found imagery, textiles, paint, printmaking, and other materials. Emphasis will be placed on creative problem-solving, craftsmanship, and the ability to convey ideas through mixed media.

The course will culminate in a final project where you will synthesize your skills into a cohesive piece reflecting a theme of their choice. A final presentation will provide an opportunity for you to discuss their artistic process, inspiration, and techniques with their peers.

This in-depth and exciting course will introduce students to the vast and endlessly expressive world of portrait drawing. The course will begin with an overview of the structure and proportions of the human head and face. Students will then review basic facial features and expressions. Next the course will cover different methods of “blocking in” large shapes first, then working into the details to establish an accurate likeness and sense of character. We will then cover, in detail, all of the facial features, the structure and expressive qualities of each one individually and how they interact with the others.

The later part of the class will focus on value (tonal) accuracy and “edge” control to bring an emotional, atmospheric and narrative content to one’s portrait work. Students will work in charcoal, graphite and conté and will have live models, skeletons, plaster casts and anatomy charts to reference in every session. There will a high level of one-on-one time and attention from the instructor given the small group size.

It is unclear as to how far back the art of portrait drawing goes in history, but one of the oldest known portrait drawings dates back 27,000 years. It is to this history that the students of this class will connect, learn from and add to.

The objective of this course is to introduce students to some of the key elements of authentic Asian cooking. With a focus on southern Chinese cuisine, students will gain hands-on experience cooking some typical Chinese dishes. At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to identify ingredients used and basic processes related to Asian cooking. Combined with lectures, we will cook and taste one dish together in each class.

Exploring the beautiful game of soccer from the movie to learning the different positions to playing the sport outside.

This class will focus on the popular New England board game Cribbage. We will learn the rules together and then play in small groups. Participation and knowledge of the rules will be paramount toward success in this class. Later in the term we will revive some other classic board games, and even take suggestions from the students on other games they may want to play.
 

Have you ever wanted to be an elf? A dwarf? How about a dragonborn? Have you ever wanted to go adventuring, find magical treasures, or engage in exciting battles with orcs and goblins? Well here’s your chance. This May Term class will be all about the first and greatest role-playing game ever created: Dungeons & Dragons. This is the game that started it all. If you like FortNite, you can thank Dungeons & Dragons; if you like Final Fantasy, give thanks to D&D. In this course we will be creating our own characters, engaging in fabulous adventures with them, and even dabbling in the creation of our own game design. I hope you join us.
 

For ESOL 1, 2, or 3 students ONLY (ESOL may repeat taking this course). Students will play games and interact with each other while learning and using English.

The field of Aviation is growing, and many of the existing pilots are nearing retirement. Due to this increased demand for employment in the field, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has developed a 4 year High School Aviation Curriculum. Fryeburg Academy is the first school in Maine to adopt this curriculum and this May Term class counts as the introductory year of this new 4-year program. The class will explore Aviation as a whole, and delve into hand-ons projects that explore the history of Aviation. Projects will include building a small working hot air balloon, building a wind tunnel and testing wing designs, and designing a space capsule that will keep a marshmallow peep safe when placed in a vacuum chamber.
 

This class will introduce students to the TOEFL test. You will become comfortable with the four parts of the test and learn strategies for each one. We will take a mini-TOEFL at the end of the class, but students will not have the opportunity to take a full-length test. If you have already taken a full-length TOEFL prep class, this class will not be helpful for you.
 

Students will learn some of the tenets of building with natural materials. They will learn to use basic tools to construct a clay pizza oven on a wooden base (plinth).
 

In this class, we will learn about rules, systems, strategy, and probability through playing hiqh-quality board games. Well-designed board games have exploded in popularity in recent years, especially during the pandemic. There are literally hundreds of creative, fun, and complex games to choose from. In this course, you will learn to play, learn to teach, learn to strategize, and perhaps most importantly, experience the satisfaction of mastering something that initially seemed too complicated to master. With a heavy focus on active game play, students will engage in regular competition and discussion of games, and will also teach games they have learned to other students. The final assessment will be a deep-dive presentation into each student's favorite game, created as either a play through or tutorial video that can be archived to teach future students how to enjoy that game more easily. Grading will be based on overall participation in class and quality/depth of final artifact.

The art of strategy is a class that focuses on teaching students the many different strategies you can use against your opponents in a multitude of different games. We play a number of strategic games including, but not limited to: Chess, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and Risk. These games can be approached in many different ways and harrowing in on the best strategy to win in specific situations is what this class is about.

For ESOL 2 and 3 students ONLY (some restrictions may apply to ESOL 2 students…at teacher’s discretion). Learn about the parts of a story using a plot diagram, while reading stories and watching movies for reference, in order to be able to write your own story.

Students will analyze various genres of film for narrative technique, then use what they learn to write their own short film scripts.
 

We will explore the common aspects that make up dystopian stories and how they reflect the current world in which we live.… Your job for the next three weeks is to show up and have fun.

Final Project - The last week you will work with a partner or individually and create your own dystopian society; you can write a short story, a PowerPoint, to explain your society, or create a magazine with news articles/ads with dystopian elements Another option will be to create a sequel or prequel for Five to One, or write a final chapter BE CREATIVE!!!!

Week 1 We will discuss what makes up a dystopian society! We will read Red Rising

Week 2 Finish Red Rising and If there is time We will watch a film or show.

Week 3 Work on final projects - presentations will be on the second half of Thursday and Friday.

Make the daunting task of writing a "perfect" college essay a little less stressful by getting a head start. Students in this class will read successful essays, explore various topics, and complete a final draft for possible submission.
 

Art, words, panels, layouts--these are the parts of comics that, when put together, create one of the most dynamic forms of media on the planet. We will read and discuss a variety of comics to become familiar with their content, form, and conventions. Additionally, we will review and practice many of the methods and tools used in the creation of comics. Once familiar with these elements, you will create our own characters and short comics, incorporating all the things we’ve learned.

This open-ended, student-driven course will offer you an introductory gateway into the ancient and cherished discipline of philosophy. We will embark on a “whirlwind tour” of the essential questions, ideas, and issues in philosophy. You will learn to philosophize through seminar-style discussions and reflective journaling. The course will culminate in a creative project on a philosophical idea of special interest to you, intended as a stepping stone to further exploration. Join us, for the love of wisdom!

Do you like to argue for the pure pleasure of argument? Do you disagree with your friends and family just to see what kind of response you get? Do you always have to prove your point and get in the last word?

Learn the basics of formal debate and argument structure. Explore many controversial topics and diverse significance. Learn how to argue for the opposing opinion. Become more comfortable with public speaking. Join us to debate a variety of topics.

This course will introduce students the value of financial independence. The first week students will cover a variety topics and identify and prepare for an interview of a successful business person. The second week student will conduct the interview prepare their report and final presentation. The third week student will present on what they learn and submit there report. This course is for juniors only. The course is available to all juniors, however, the local student (MSAD72 and Chatham) with the top report will receive a $10,000 college scholarship through the generosity of an anonymous local donor.

This course is for all students currently enrolled in Algebra 2 Honors who are planning to continue on to Pre-Calculus next year. This course will be an extension of the current Algebra 2 curriculum and cover such topics as rational functions as well as expand on work with roots and radicals. Students are expected to have at least a B- average to enroll.

Are you a current PreCalc student who just can't get enough of math? Are you interested in taking AP Calculus next year, or perhaps more advanced math courses in college? This is the class for you! In PreCalc Topics, we will explore some interesting applications of the concepts you have already learned this year, and give you some practice with calculus topics that will set you up for success next year. We'll finish the year with a fun game-show style math competition, where you will compete against your classmates to win a grand prize! This class is strongly recommended for any current Precalculus honors students that are interested in taking AP Calculus next year (You must have completed a year of Precalculus to register for this course).

Explore microbiology and express what you discover through visual art media. Learn about microorganisms, what they look like, and how they live. Practice using microscopes and culturing microbial life. Develop your artistic skills through drawing, painting, digital drawing, and photography of microscopic life.
 

Imagine designing plants that capture CO2 and convert it into biofuels or designing self-healing concrete using microbes to reduce construction cost and pollution. This hands-on and interdisciplinary course introduces students to the growing field of synthetic biology, where genetics, molecular biology and engineering converge to design solutions that address real-world challenges, like climate change, pollution, hunger, or antibiotic resistance. Students will explore foundational concepts such as gene expression, DNA manipulation, genetic circuits, and other molecular techniques, while gaining some skills in laboratory, data analysis, and project design.
 

For ESOL 1 or 2 students ONLY! Learn how to talk and work through the steps of the scientific method in English by completing simple and fun science experiments.
 

We will learn about soil, planting, growing, and harvesting food through development of the school garden. We will learn about how to identify and manage common pests and diseases in the garden as well as common agricultural practices such as sustainable agriculture and permaculture to find ways to implement these ideas into our garden plans. We will also get a chance to speak with local farmers and tour their facilities to see how they grow food in our area!

For most of history, humans have studied the stars. From naked eye observations to advanced orbiting telescopes, our observations of the heavens have helped us understand both our world and the universe. In this class, we will discuss the history of astronomy and how it has helped shaped our understanding, as well as talk about a number of ideas related to the science. As part of the class, we will make arrangements to go outside and see the stars, and everyone will have a chance to make a presentation on a topic of their choice.

Meteorology is the study of the Earth's atmosphere, including weather forecasting, climate, and atmospheric phenomena. In this class, we will look at what causes various weather phenomena, as well as discuss how to interpret what information we have in order to make predictions about the upcoming weather.
 

African Geography examines the unique geographic features of Africa and their influence on human settlement, culture, and development. Students will investigate the continent’s rich history, contemporary issues, and global significance through the lens of geography. Through hands-on projects, map analyses, case studies, and discussions, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of Africa’s geographic diversity and its influence on global affairs. By the end of the course, students will develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for the complexity and significance of Africa in a global context.

What kinds of music have you heard your parents listen to? It probably sounds old. Maybe un-mixed and poorly produced. There is noise and it might have more than three verses, be longer than three minutes, mention things you don’t understand, and probably (definitely) has bad language. Guitar solos, funny outfits, hip-hop about the poh-leese. All that stuff. Maybe you cringe and don’t want to listen to it but at some level you probably don’t understand it and do kind of what to so that you can understand your parents a bit. They probably say their music got it and you also want to (should) get it. Come listen and learn!

We will explore global perspectives on stories and events through centuries of fine art. Students visit museums like The Louvre, The Isabella Stewart Gardiner, Boston Museum of Fine Art online; guided by the teacher for preset topics such as mythological villains, tombs or the afterlife, and images of animals like horses, cats, or dragons.

Students will identify a subject, topic, historic or current event and create a collection of art work which portrays various and diverse perspectives of the subject in a wide variety of media across time. Students will present their curated collections, complete with the artist, title, and current location, as a final project.
 

FA Guatemala Encounters is a course / trip designed to explore the connections between North and Central America past and present. The trip includes visits to Mayan cultural sites and learning about the enduring traditions of Mayan culture. The trip goes beyond tourism to meet and understand the lives of Guatemalan people living in a challenge filled world. We will learn about Women’s Rights efforts on the outskirts of Guatemala City and about environmental threats from colonial industry. We want to find connections that help us continue a longer learning arc and a longer relationship that develops into mutual care and growth.
 

Equipped with historical sources, students will plan and plunder their way through the Caribbean as a pirate crew, using tabletop game models to execute the high-seas crimes they create.

Come waste some time! Or figure out how to learn something while you’re doom scrolling or watching TikTok. There is a lot going on around us in the digital world so let’s look at it together and figure out what is real, what is credible, and what is definitely not either of those. This will be a blend of critiquing news and journalism, finding good and reliable information, and wasting a bunch of time looking at and for stuff that is not good, rots your brain, and is fun.

Students explore The Rosetta Stone, King Tut, Nineveh’s Assyrian Library, Troy, Machu Picchu, Pompeii, The Dead Sea Scrolls, Atlantis, Olduvai Gorge, or The Tomb of 10,000 Warriors in a survey style. In the final week, students create an artifact and a slideshow to present to the class as a final project.
 

Do you think you are easily influenced? Do you think you're persuasive? In this class we will put that to the test! Students will be asked to not only learn about how propaganda is used throughout history and today but also create their own propaganda. We will also talk about the world of cults and how they relate to propaganda as well as what effects they have on people and history.
 

Classic Rock Concerts- In this course, we will be viewing three Concert Films - Pink Floyd "The Wall", The Band's "The Last Waltz", and The Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense". After each concert, we will dive into the musicians' music catalogs, analyze their song lyrics, and discuss their profound impact on the music industry. Towards the end of the course, we will have a culminating project to showcase our understanding and appreciation of concert films. Additionally, we will discuss the topic of concert ticket pricing, and how it has become increasingly unaffordable for the average person. Will concert films be the only way for the average American to experience live music from their favorite musicians?

This course is designed for students who want to improve their skills in the game of basketball. Each class will be held as if it was a varsity practice and we will work on ball handling, shooting, defense, situational basketball and much more. Priority is given to students who were a part of the basketball program or who are truly interested in trying out for the program in the future.

Tennis drills, skills, and strokes for more of an advanced level.

Students will learn various styles of international ballroom dance. They will focus on two styles per week with time split between learning and practice. All dances are partner dances and students must be comfortable dancing with a variety of partners. During the final week of the class students will prepare for a mini competition in which they will be judged by outside judges.

Better, Faster, Stronger is a dynamic fitness program designed to help students improve their speed, agility, strength, overall physical conditioning and understanding of strength and conditioning. The course will consist of high intensity plyometric circuits, weight training, agility drills, and core/balance training, each taught with a strong focus on sound biomechanics and safe techniques. The course will be progressive and fast paced and will require focus and attention from participants. Topics covered will include: Basic human biomechanics as they relate to fitness training, safe execution of weight training techniques, benefits of incorporating different types of fitness training, and injury prevention during exercise. Given the intensity of the workouts, it is recommended that students choosing this class have, at least, a basic background in fitness and strength and conditioning. Instructor approval will be required to enroll in this course as well. Participants should also have a desire to improve their understanding of strength and conditioning in order to reach the next level in their own fitness. By the end of the term participants will without question be Better, Faster, Stronger.
 

Chess. It is one of the first strategy games and still one of the most difficult to master. This May Term course will explore the many strategies that will make you a better chess player, and also develop skills that will transfer to other strategy games, such as Stratego, Khet Laser Game, Risk, and Othello, to name a few. In addition to studying traditional chess play and other strategy games, this course culminates with several strategy based tournaments. I hope you join us.
 

Disc (Frisbee) golf was introduced to the 2019 Fryeburg Academy May Term. The recreational rules of the sport will be taught and reinforced, as well as etiquette rules. The students will help develop a viable course on campus and learn or improve frisbee throwing techniques and strategies. The benefits of an active outdoor lifestyle will also be embraced. If possible a trip to an established course will be pursued.

Students will explore nature and fitness in Mount Washington Valley.  Students will learn ways to enjoy fitness and nature by participating in activities that include: stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking,  and self-care. The students will have opportunities to kayak or stand up paddleboard and take field trips to go hiking in Mount Washington Valley. Students will participate in fitness, nature, and wellness activities on a daily basis, rain or shine.

Beginning Radiant Warrior Hatha Yoga

Roll Raiders! Raiders Ride! Go Blue! Go Raiders! Fanville will be a course centered around the traditions of being a Sports Fan. Focusing on learning a bit about different sports and their rules, knowing when is a great time to cheer and when is not. Sharing ideas on how FA's student section can take over to become champs of best student section in the state! (Not a real award but for #Raiderpride!)

Learn the basic skills and etiquette to golfing!

In this class the student will gain practical experience preparing authentic Mediterranean dishes from start to finish. Learn how to prepare balanced, nutritious meals.Learn essential techniques like chopping, marinating, following recipes and cooking/baking the food that will help them gain confidence to prepare meals at home. They will enjoy tasting each dish they prepare and will have the recipes to take home. The will need to work as a team to prepare all the meals during class.
 

Do you want to unwind, listen to music and work on your problem solving? In this course, students will work together to put together a Mega Puzzle. In recent years, we have completed puzzles that range from 5,000-9,000 pieces and even an 18,000 piece puzzle that was completed over two May Term Sessions. Puzzles are known to improve hand-eye-coordination, visual-spatial reasoning as well as even increasing IQ! Working on puzzles can also reduce stress and relax the mind. If you enjoy puzzling, then this class is for you.

Let's hit the rocky trails and rolling single track that blanket this beautiful valley we inhabit. This class will not simply consist of riding, sure there will be plenty of chances to get absolutely steezey while shredding the gnar of our home trails, but we will also learn other things as well. We will cover proper riding technique, how to warm up pre ride and cool down post ride and different exercises to better prepare the body for riding. This will be an immersive class that will put safety first, all the while providing the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and push your limits. A functional mountain bike, helmet, water bottle/hydration pack and backpack that can be worn while riding are required. Knee and elbow pads are recommended, but not required. Some days we will be working out at the academy, other days we will be biking. Time to send it!
