Learning by Doing: The Power of Experiential Learning

Experiential learning at Fryeburg Academy provides students with hands-on, real-world experience that helps them develop practical skills and gain a deeper understanding of the subjects they're studying. Whether through internships, Outdoor Learning and Research Center (OLRC), Technical Arts, or other hands-on learning, students can apply what they've learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

"My student internship at Molly Ockett School was an eye-opening experience. It helped me to realize the crucial role teachers play in shaping the future of our children. I gained valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of being an educator, and it reinforced my desire to pursue a career in teaching."

Outdoor Learning & Research Center

Fryeburg Academy's Outdoor Learning & Research Center (OLRC) offers two distinct OLRC Certificate programs: Adventure Education and Research Design.  Beginning in ninth grade, students develop their leadership and social-emotional skills through various outdoor experiences such as our ropes challenge course, camping, canoeing, rock climbing, skiing, and hiking. Students are also introduced to field research principles, with the option to enroll in Honors Research Design courses. In addition, the Academy’s agriculture program falls under the OLRC and includes the school’s garden and farm-to-table operations, which supplies our dining room with fresh, locally sourced produce while teaching our students essential sustainability and farming techniques.
