Fryeburg Academy is dedicated to supporting students in achieving their post-secondary goals through our career and college counseling services.

Our team of committed counselors provides individualized guidance to help students navigate the college application process, explore various career options, and gain hands-on experience through internships. The counseling team also provides standardized test preparation and college and career planning workshops to equip students with the necessary resources to succeed. At Fryeburg Academy, we offer a comprehensive and tailored plan to meet each student's unique needs, ensuring they make informed decisions about their future endeavors.

We'll Walk You Each Step of the Way

Having a dedicated school counselor can make a significant difference in a student's academic journey. That's why we ensure that every student is assigned a school counselor during their first year who stays with them during their entire career at the Academy. Your counselor will be there to guide you through any challenges, provide support, and help you make the most of your educational experience by following these four easy steps:

STEP ONE

Step 1: Discover Your Passions, Get Involved

(Grade 9)

Talk with your school counselor about your interests and your goals.
Take appropriately challenging courses in core academic areas (math, English, science, social studies, and a world language) and give them your best effort.
Get involved with school clubs and activities, including community service and leadership opportunities.
Keep a running list of accomplishments, awards, and recognitions. This will be very helpful in preparing a resume and for your college applications.
Start to explore and identify fields of interest. Talk with family members, teachers, and other trusted adults, research careers online, and attend career fairs and other events.
Make good decisions and demonstrate strong character and integrity.
Start talking with your family about ways to finance your education.
If you are a student-athlete and hope to participate in competitive college athletics, discuss NCAA requirements with your school counselor.

STEP TWO

Step 2: Explore Careers

(Grade 10)

Talk with your post-secondary school counselor about your college and career interests.
Continue to challenge yourself academically by taking rigorous coursework.
Consider taking AP and Honors level courses.
Complete a career interest inventory with your school counselor during a classroom visit in the fall.
Take the PSAT in the fall. It is excellent practice for the SAT and provides great feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. It also provides excellent tips on how to improve your future test scores.
Learn about the college admissions process through a mock admissions review during a classroom visit in the spring.
Continue talking to your parents about paying for college.

STEP THREE

Step 3: Get Serious About Your Options

(Grade 11)

Focus on your college and career goals, and talk with your post-secondary school counselor about your options.
Continue to challenge yourself academically and keep those grades up!
Consider taking AP and Honors level courses.
Meet with college representatives who come to Fryeburg Academy.
Take the PSAT/NMSQT test in the fall at Fryeburg Academy.
Take the SAT in the spring at Fryeburg Academy.
Attend a college fair.
Attend the Junior College night in the spring to learn more about college admissions and how to apply for financial aid.
Research options for paying for college, including scholarships.
Register for an FSA ID, and have your parent do the same.
Create a list of potential colleges.
Visit colleges.
Register with the NCAA if interested in playing Division I or II athletics at the college level.
If you are an artist, start working on your portfolio.

STEP FOUR

Step 4: Refine Your Options & Apply

(Grade 12)

Meet with your school counselor to narrow down your list of colleges.
Continue to challenge yourself, keep those grades up, and make good decisions!
Make decisions regarding Early Action and Early Decision programs.
Register and take the SAT and/or ACT in the fall.
Send SAT, ACT, and/or TOEFL scores to colleges.
Request transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Visit colleges if you still need to.
Schedule Interviews if required or recommended.
Complete a portfolio if required.
Schedule an audition if required.
Attend the financial aid night at the Academy in the fall.
Complete the FAFSA (and the CSS Profile if required).
Complete and submit all college applications before deadlines.
Check your application portals often!
Follow up on any missing documents (college and financial aid applications).
Apply for scholarships.
Review application decisions and share the news with your post-secondary school counselor.
Compare financial aid notification letters.
Decide on the college to attend by May 1 and notify colleges of your decisions.
