FA Students Discover the Joys of Ice Fishing
- Student Life
During the last week of January, environmental science students, led by Mrs. Yannelli, enjoyed a bright, sunny day ice fishing at Moose Pond in Bridgton, Maine. Dressed in warm hats, gloves, and winter jackets, the group met with local professionals to learn the craft, with the beautiful Pleasant Mountain serving as a scenic backdrop.
During the trip, students learned how to set traps with the assistance of several volunteers, including Mrs. Yanelli’s husband, who coordinated the event in advance. Volunteers from organizations such as Trout Unlimited conducted a station on fish identification, teaching students the differences between cold-water and warm-water fisheries. Additionally, three staff members from the Lakes Environmental Association were present to run two stations focused on water quality parameters and the microscopic life found beneath the ice. A joint staff member from the Loon Echo Land Trust and Sebago Clean Waters emphasized the importance of whole watershed conservation.
