Susan Weist Van Dehey '56

Susan Elizabeth Weist Van Dehey, 87, of Waterford, Maine, died peacefully on April 14, 2026 in Norway, Maine, with devoted friend Marlene Fillebrown by her side. Sue's brother in Florida, Carl "Ket" Weist, assisted her journey by singing "In the Garden" to her over the phone.

Sue is survived by her sister, Barbara "Muffie" Alling (Guy) and her brother Carl "Ket" Weist and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Sue was born to the Rev. Dr. Carl S. Weist and Elizabeth F. Weist on January 6,1939, in Mount Vernon, New York. She graduated from Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Maine. She later struck out on her own to California where she got a job at Del Monte in San Francisco. She met Walter Van Dehey, a San Francisco police officer, to whom she was happily married for 51 years. They lived in northern California, traveling frequently to Maine with their beloved dog Rusty, then moved permanently to Waterford, Maine where they felt most at home.They were both dedicated supporters of the local public libraries but especially of their church community.
They worked pancake breakfasts and bean suppers and were active in church groups and activities. Sue was multi-talented with varied interests and hobbies over the years including cooking, fishing, canoeing, painting, Native American beadwork, spiritual and wellness activities and much more. She learned Braille, volunteering at a San Francisco radio station to help a blind DJ Braille all his records, copy and work area.

After Walt passed away, her friend Marlene and the whole Fillebrown family welcomed her into their lives and their hearts, helping her live "her best life" during her last years. Her wishes were to have no public memorial service.
