Richard Monson '59

Richard Gene Monson, 84, of Fryeburg, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026. Born in Denmark, Maine, Richard grew up in the house his parents, Eugene and Ruth Monson, built.

Richard's first job was at Jim's TV in Bridgton, where he discovered an aptitude for electronics and laid the foundation for his career as an electrical engineer. Following this early experience, he served in the U.S. Army, earning distinction as a sharpshooter.

After his military service, Richard attended the University of Maine. Upon earning his degree, he began his professional journey at the Naval Underwater Systems Center, eventually retiring after more than 30 years of service with the U.S. government.

In his retirement, Richard enjoyed motoring up and down Moose Pond. Although he was known in his youth for drag racing the roads of Brownfield, in later years, he became recognized for his generosity, regularly donating to numerous charities.

Richard was a well-known presence in Fryeburg, frequently visiting local restaurants and enjoying connections with his community. He will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community.Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara. He is survived by his daughter, Wanda; his son, Wayne; and his younger brother, James. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held at Berry Cemetery in Denmark on May 8, 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg.
