Richard F. Bucknell '56

Richard “Dick” Fred Bucknell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024, after a courageous 25-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 86 years old.

Dick was born on January 1, 1938, in Porter, Maine, to George and Dorothy Bucknell. From a young age, he exhibited a passion for learning and adventure, which led him to join Fryeburg Academy. After his time there, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. It was during his service that he nurtured his lifelong love for flying.

Following his military service, Dick embarked on a distinguished career as a commercial pilot, eventually transitioning to a corporate pilot and retiring as the Director of Corporate Aviation for US West. His expertise and dedication to aviation were widely recognized, culminating in his service on the Colorado Aeronautics Board for eight years, where he held the position of president during his final term.

In his retirement, Dick found joy and peace in sailing, a testament to his love for the skies and the seas. He took great pride in sharing his extensive knowledge of flying and airplanes with his sons, fostering their own passion for aviation.

Dick is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Sherrill Bucknell; his son John and his wife Cindy; his son Steve; three cherished grandchildren; and four adored great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy, and his brothers, George and Randy.

Dick’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family, his country, and his passions. His legacy will live on through the memories he created and the love he shared. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private celebration of life will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in memory of Dick’s brave fight against the disease.
