Kay Fernald Littlefield '55

Kay F. (Fernald) Littlefield, age 86, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, at her home looking over Lovewell Pond. She was born June 18, 1936, at her family’s farm in Stow, ME, a daughter of Erville and Elizabeth (Bickford) Fernald. Kay was the youngest of five children and was so proud of her family’s farm and had many pictures and paintings of her birthplace.

She attended the one room school house in Stow through 8th grade and then graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1955. It was there and at a summer job at the Lovell Telephone Office that seethe love of her life, Azul B. Littlefield. Kay and Azel married on September 2, 1955, before moving to Gorham, ME to earn her teaching degree from the Gorham State Teacher’s College. Her teaching career started at the Stow School and then to Sadie F. Adams School in North Fryeburg. Kay and Azel built a beautiful home on Christian Hill in Lovell, ME. She left teaching to stay at home with her children and did the bookkeeping for Azel’s very successful carpentry business. When her children were older, she worked at Memorial Hospital and then owned the Village Florist in Fryeburg until her retirement. Kay and Azel’s greatest joy was spending time with their loving family. She and Azelmoved to the Villages in Florida for a short time and then to Poland, ME. After Azel’s passing, she went to live with her daughter Lisa and her family in Scarborough and then moved back to a house built especially for her by her two sons and three of her grandsons. Kay was predeceased by her loving parents, Erville and Elizabeth Fernald, her sisters Barbara, Doris, and Beverly and her brother Merle. Shewa’s heart-broken in November 2014 with the loss of her beloved husband of 59 years, Azel B. Littlefield. Kay is survived by her loving family, her son Bradford and his wife Christina of Fryeburg and their son Kyle; her son Darren and his wife Susan of Mechanic Falls and their children, Michael Littlefield and wife Tessa, Jacob Littlefield and wife Emily, Caroline Kheang and husband Bunra; and her daughter Lisa Giroux and husband Arthur of Scarborough and their children Noah Danis, Eric, Daniel, and John; Azel’s sister Phyllis, and brothers Hobart, Raymond, and Rodney; and many special nieces and nephews. The family will hold visitation on Friday, January 5, 2023, from4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 9 Warren Street, Fryeburg. A funeral will take place on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the North Fryeburg Community Chapel, 3 North Fryeburg Road, Fryeburg, ME.
