Julia Joan Charles Blake '54

Julia Joan Blake, 89, died on March 23, 2026. Born July 24, 1936, in Fryeburg, Maine, Julia later lived in Minot, Maine.
Independent, hard-working, and resilient to the core, Julia had a way of meeting life head-on—usually with busy hands, a
practical plan, and something warm to offer anyone who walked through the door. From the start, she did things her own way,
and she did them well; that was simply Julia.

Julia grew up in Fryeburg, attended and graduated from Fryeburg Academy, and was a proud member of the Class of 1954.
During high school, she worked as a waitress—an early preview of her lifelong talent for taking care of people while staying on
her feet and getting the job done.

A skilled seamstress, Julia built a working life stitched together with talent, patience, and a sharp eye for the details that matter.
She worked for Nita's Custom Sew and Bridal in Greene, Maine, and also for The Wedding Shop in Auburn, Maine. She later
retired from Paine Products, and even then she wasn’t exactly “done”—she continued doing home sewing for Grandpa's Garden
in Topsham, Maine. If something needed hemming, mending, tailoring, or improving, Julia was the one who could make it
happen—often faster than anyone expected.

On June 3, 1955, Julia married Leonard S. Blake in Conway, New Hampshire. Together they raised four daughters. Leonard passed
away on April 1, 1993, but the family they built and the steady love behind it remained a lasting part of Julia’s story.

After she was first introduced, most people quickly learned that “Julia” and “sitting still” didn’t belong in the same sentence. She
was an avid reader who also loved flower gardening, puzzles, and being outdoors. She enjoyed bird watching and took short
trips to the coast to admire lighthouses and the ocean shore. And in true Julia fashion, she sewed for her girls—because of
course she did. It wasn’t just a hobby; it was how she showed love, one careful stitch at a time.

Julia’s legacy can be summed up in advice that sounds simple—until you realize how deeply it reflects who she was: Always offer
your guests refreshments. She lived that kind of hospitality with a wink and a warmth that made people feel welcomed, fed, and
somehow a little more at ease. If you stopped by, you didn’t leave thirsty, and you certainly didn’t leave without being cared for
in Julia’s no-nonsense, lighthearted way.

Julia was predeceased by her husband, Leonard S. Blake; her father, Louis Charles; her mother, Nellie D. (McAllister) Charles; her
brother, Halbert Charles; and her sister, Pauline Santa Maria.

She is survived by her daughters, Cindy L. Veilleux, Lori J. Hart (Russ), Lisa A. Prevost, and Deborah L. Blake; her grandson, Shawn
Hendricks (Jessica); her grandson, Corey Martel; her granddaughter, Shanna Casey (Corey); her granddaughter, Amanda Cyr
(Jon); her granddaughter, Latesa Clark (Stephen Daignault); her sister, Ann Nelson; and many great grandchildren.

Final resting place will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 980 Turner Street, Auburn.
