Frederick Harney, Jr '60

Born in Beverly, Fred was the son of the late Frederick "Cookie" Sr. and Susan (Minigan) Harney. He was raised and educated in Salem, graduating from Salem High School in 1958. Following his high school graduation, Fred continued his education at Fryeburg Academy and Wentworth Institute, graduating in 1962.

Mr. Harney devoted his entire professional career working as a civil engineer for the state of Massachusetts, working in the MassHighway Division for 38 years until the time of his retirement in 2001.

A lifelong resident of the City of Salem, Fred participated in various organizations and hobbies. He served as a valued member of the City of Salem Conservation Commission and was also a member of the American Radio Relay League as a HAM Radio Operator, with his call sign W1DNZ. He loved life and enjoyed his wide selection of suits, sitting by the pool and catching a tan, his extensive Lionel train collection or simply enjoying the company of his family as a loving husband, father and papa. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife, Pauline with whom he shared 52 years of marriage, Fred is survived by his daughters, Carolee Harney of Salem and Emily Harney of Salem; his grandchildren, Breanna and Shaun; his siblings, Sue Ellen Walsh and her husband, Brian of Delmar, NY and Richard Harney and his wife, Claudia of Peabody and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Fred's funeral service which will be held at O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem, on Thursday, November 30th at 10 a.m. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours on Wednesday, November 29th from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's memory may be made to the Northeast Arc, 1 Southside Rd, Danvers, MA 01923.
