Carl Taylor '62

Carl Edward (Croy) Taylor was born on March 29, 1944 at the Eye and Ear Infirmary on the corner of Bramhall and Congress Streets to Elizabeth (Gray) Croy and Edward Croy. When Elizabeth remarried in January 1951 he was adopted and raised by Kenneth Richard Taylor. Carl grew up in Portland and went to school through Lincoln Junior High School on Stevens Ave. before going to Fryeburg Academy for his high school years. After graduating from Fryeburg, he then went to SMVTI for two years graduating with a degree in Marine Engineering.

Carl served his country in the Army and Army Reserve from March 1966 until March 1972 and was stationed in Vietnam at the 604th Transportation Company in Pleiku from April 1967 through March 1968. Upon returning home from overseas he married Carolyn Lee Clarke on April 20, 1968. Carl and Carolyn adopted their son Michael in 1972 and raised him together in Portland Maine until her passing in 1987.

Carl had several jobs during his lifetime: deckhand and then captain at Casco Bay Lines, fuel boat operator for Harbor Supply Oil Co., petroleum inspector for Charles Martin Co. and Caleb Brett, truck driver for Gulf Oil, bus driver for The Greater Portland Transit and finally retired from there as the Assistant Transportation Manager in 2010.

During his retirement years Carl kept busy with his duties in his beloved Masonic Fraternity. He went through the several stations of officers at Saccarappa Lodge # 86 in Westbrook, Maine and was the Master of the Lodge in 1998. After being master he remained active in the fraternity as secretary of the lodge for many years.

In 2020 he was appointed Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Grand Lodge of Maine by Most Worshipful Richard Nedeau, who also awarded him the prestigious Simon Greenleaf Medal in 2021 and was honored by the 17th Masonic District by being named the Mason of the Year for 2020 for which he was most humbled and proud.

Carl is survived by his wife Carolyn (Curtis) Hill Taylor who were married on September 16, 1995 in Upton, Maine. Carolyn lost her first husband Charles Gary Hill to cancer in 1991.

Carl is also survived by his son Michael Carl Taylor of South Portland, step children Heather (Hill) Ford and her husband Mark of Trenton, Maine, Bethany (Hill) Hand of South Paris, Maine, and grandchildren: Aiden Ford, Abigail Ford, Alden Ford, Emmett Hand, and Owen Taylor.

Visiting hours will be March 29,2022 12:00pm to 2:00pm with a service starting at 2:00pm at Dolby Blais & Segee Funeral Home in Wesbrook, Maine. The burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on March 29, 2022 at 3:00 PM.
