Fryeburg Academy Hosts First VEX V5 Robotics Competition
On Saturday, January 25, 2020, Fryeburg Academy welcomed 100 plus students from nine different schools from around Maine and New Hampshire to its first hosted VEX V5 Robotics Competition. The day-long event was held in FA’s Ada Cram Wadsworth Arena, where 21 robotic teams competed with the assistance of many volunteers.
“We had over 20 parent, student, and faculty volunteers,” says Dave Sartory, FA’s technology integrator and robotics club advisor. “There was a massive outpouring of support from the coaches and volunteers from Kennett High School’s robotics program who helped us navigate the complexities of hosting our first major event. The day would not have been as successful without their help.”
At the competition, four FA teams competed with Fryeburg Academy’s Team C (Ava Chadbourne ’21, Sam Stoker-Ball ’22, Mel Boeker ’22, and Roze Schenstrom ’22), earning an invitation to the Maine State Championships being held in South Portland on March 14, 2020. The Academy’s rookie team Where’s Peter? (Yeet Ercan ‘20, Andrii Obertas ‘21, and Quang Nguyen ’21) made it to the final eliminations, and Kennett High School’s power alliance of Team #5106A Alpha and #5106C Checkmate earned Tournament Champion Trophies. “While we didn’t ultimately earn a trophy at the tournament,” continues Sartory, “We’re still a young team, and we competed against some outstanding schools with established robotics programs today. I look forward to building FA’s robotics program and working with our club to gain more experience.”
Currently, Fryeburg Academy has 20 active team members (13 competing and seven volunteer students). Additionally, the Academy’s newly offered robotics classes already have over 36 students who are learning the VEX robotics system⸺a hands-on learning curriculum and robotics kit designed to teach high school students problem-solving, coding, and engineering. Five Fryeburg Academy seniors have been named College Board National Recognition Scholars, scoring in the top 2.5% of 2019 PSAT/NMSQT test takers and identifying as one or more of the following: African American, Hispanic American, Latinx, Indigenous, or attending school in a rural area and/or come from a small town. These students are Kyleana Carbone, Ava Chadbourne, Kaia DeVries, Quang Nguyen, and Andrii Obertas.
Additionally, the College Board has recognized Kaia DeVries as a Commended Scholar for achieving a score that was among the highest 50,000 scores on tests taken. 1.7 million students nationally took the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT.
Despite trying times with the current pandemic, science must go on. On Saturday, Sept. 26th, the University of Southern Maine kicked off a series of workshops intended to engage Maine high school students in Cube Satellite development.
CubeSats are small research satellites that are made up of multiples of 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm, that have ushered in a new era of space research, allowing high-schools and universities to participate in this one very niche field. The workshop had prestigious speakers that included an award-winning educator, engineers work at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a commercial CubeSat kit company and USM faculty.
The academic year at Fryeburg Academy is in full swing with in-person learning for over 450 day students and 60 resident students who hail from 16 different countries (China, Vietnam, Canada, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Spain, South Korea, Turkey, Rwanda, Ghana, Morocco, Ukraine, Cyprus, Japan/Russia, Nepal, and the United States). Additionally, another 40 day students have opted to attend the Academy remotely, and 14 international students are participating in the Academy's newly launched remote learning program — World Classroom@FryeburgAcademy.
