6th Annual Fryeburg Academy Jazz Residency Initiative: Jeff Coffin
The Jazz Residency Initiative presented its 6th Annual Fryeburg Academy Capstone Concert, featuring Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.
The concert featured performances by Fryeburg Academy's Big Band, Chorus, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble as well as a 'pro set,' featuring Jeff Coffin performing with Les Harris, Jr. (drums), John Hunter (bass), and Tom Snow (piano).
Before the capstone concert, Coffin led a three-day artist-in-residency experience for Fryeburg Academy student musicians, where he taught master classes, led rehearsals, and provided instruction and feedback to student vocalists and instrumentalists.
"Jeff Coffin is one of the most exciting and dynamic guest artists we've brought to Fryeburg Academy," said Michael Sakash, FA's arts department chair. "What impressed me the most was the strong connection he established with our students. He is a master teacher and was able to meet the students at their level and ignite tremendous growth in a short period of time. For many of our students and teachers, Jeff's time at Fryeburg Academy was life-changing."
Coffin earned his three Grammy Awards during his time playing with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones from 1997 to 2010. In July of 2008, Coffin began touring with Dave Matthews Band and has remained a member since officially joining the band in 2009. When not on the road with Dave Matthews Band, Coffin fronts his groups, Jeff Coffin & the Mu'tet, and The Viridian Trio. He has released 15 solo CDs.
Additionally, Coffin is a well-respected educator. He teaches at Vanderbilt University, is a mainstay at the Jazz Educators Network, has published multiple music education books, and delivers clinics globally.
Each year on National Signing Day, some of the best student-athletes across the United States eagerly await the opportunity to sign athletic scholarships with potential colleges and universities. For FA senior, Abigail Hewes, Wednesday, November 13, was no exception.
Congratulations to FA alumnae, Georgianna Stafford '19, on becoming a 2020 National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) winner. Georgianna Stafford has been recognized for her caliber of artistic achievement and joins 686 of the nation’s most accomplished artists in the visual, literary and performing arts. Stafford was selected by an esteemed discipline-specific panel of artists through a rigorous blind adjudication process.
