FA Cross-Country Runners Emily Carty and Alfie Walker Run Personal Bests at Class B State Meet

FRYEBURG — It was a record-setting day for members of the Fryeburg Academy cross-county teams on Saturday. Alfie Walker, the lone male Raider, and all seven members of the girls' team ran personal bests at the Class B State Meet in Belfast, Maine.

"The girls finished eighth overall as a team," Bill Reilly, Raiders' head coach, said. "Every girl ran their season best time at the State Meet. They were focused and ready!"

The top eight schools as well as the top 30 individuals in the Class B South regional at Twin Brook Recreation Area in Cumberland, Maine, earned the opportunity to run in Belfast.

In the team standings for the girls, Greely took top honors with 71 points followed by Yarmouth, 82; York, 84; Cape Elizabeth, 118; Mount Desert Island, 149; Maranacook, 156; Camden Hills, 189; Fryeburg, 213; Caribou, 214; Freeport, 51; Ellsworth, 281; Waterville, 287; and Wells, 312.

Fryeburg junior Emily Carty was seventh overall in 19:29, earning a trip to the prestigious New England Cross-Country Championships in Rhode Island this Saturday.

"Emily breaks a 27-year-old school State Meet time held by Stacy Reilly (Coach Reilly's daughter)," Reilly said. "She also qualifies for New Englands for the second straight year."

Carty was followed by teammates Zoe Maguire, 45th, 21:17; Irina Norkin, 54th, 21:39; Emily Grzyb, 66th, 22:01; Madeline Choyce, 72nd, 22:25; Merys Carty, 81st, 22:54; and Alanceiah Waiters, 88th, 23:43.
There were 103 finishers in the girls' race.

Senior Abigail Hamilton of Yarmouth won the ace in 18:05, winning by 9 seconds over Mount Desert's Tia Tardy, who was second in 18:14.48. Katherine Leggat-Barr of Greey was third in 18:14.48.

For the boys, junior Luke Laverdiere of Yarmouth topped 117 finishers to claim individual honors in 15:49. Henry Jaques of Freeport and Mitchell Libby of Wells finished second and third, respectively, in 15:57 and 16:44.
Walker, just a sophomore, was 17th overall in 17:25.

"Alfie Walker joins a select group of Fryeburg runners who are sub 18 minutes at the State Meet,' Reilly said. "Only 14 others have done it in the last 27 years.
Team honors went to Greely, who took the top spot with 66 points. Wells was second with 81 points, while Freeport, which had won the previous two titles, nipped Yarmouth by a point, 100-101, for third place.

On the same day last year's girls' team captain, Anna Lastra, moved up to No. 3 runner on her team at Stonehill College as the team won the Northeast NCAA Division II title and punched its 17th-straight ticket to the NCAA Division II Championships in Florida with a first-place finish today at the NCAA East Regional Championship at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds.

Stonehill came in first place at today's event with 48 points, 42 points ahead of runner-up Assumption College who finished with 80 points. Roberts Wesleyan College finished third with 113 points, while Daemen and Bentley University totaled 159 and 203 points, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

"This women squad is a class act," stated head coach Karen Boen. "They shuffled positions throughout the entire race with each other, but they stuck together and used each other when the time matter the most."

Senior Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) led the Skyhawks with her second first-place mark and a career-best time of 20:57.5, earning her fourth-straight All-Region honor in the 6k race. Classmate Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) followed close behind recording 11th-place tallies with a career-best time of 22:09.4. She picked up her third All-Region accolade.

Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was the second freshman to cross the finish as she recorded a time of 22:14.5 tallying 13th and her first All-Region honor.

Senior Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) and sophomore Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th place, respectively. McAdams registered a time of 22:18.5 for her third-career All-Region accolade, while Cyr posted a time of 22:20.4 for her second-career All-Region mark.

  • Academy Students Earn Silver and Bronze at the National FFA Convention

    From October 31 through November 3, five members of the Academy's FFA Chapter (Future Farmers of America) and faculty member Jennifer Solter Jones attended the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

  • FA's Falls Sports Assembly Honors Student-Athletes

    On Thursday, November 16th, Fryeburg Academy celebrated the fall sports season with its annual fall sports awards assembly held in the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center.   • Joseph R. Manning Installed as the Academy's 55th Head of School

    Fryeburg Academy and the Board of Trustees announce the installation of Joseph R. Manning as the Academy’s 55th head of school. The Installation Ceremony was held on Friday, November 3, 2023, with members of the Fryeburg Academy community, the Board of Trustees, and former head of school Erin P. Mayo in attendance as a guest speaker. Manning steps into this new leadership role during the school’s 232nd year, following a long-tenured and successful career at the Academy spanning twenty years of service. 

  • FA Students Earn Letters of Commendation in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program

    Fryeburg Academy seniors Tyler Bartick and Jiwon Choi have earned Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC) for their performance on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
